BUG: Alphabet Bar
« on: December 02, 2024, 11:09:18 pm »

When I double-click an artist with multiple albums, the alphabet bar (along the top just under the tabs) is now being shown at the album level two, but there is no alphabet (i.e. bar is blank). Previously, the alphabet bar was only shown at the top category level, at least in my experience.

Note that this only occurs when the artist has enough albums to carry onto a second row.  If there is only one row of thumbnails, there is no alphabet bar, blank or otherwise.  If there are enough covers to require a second row (or more), it displays a blank thumbnail bar.  Double clicking on any of the album art to display the file list in the lower panel will cause the blank alphabet bar to disappear.  That's good, but it shouldn't be there to begin with, and was not previously.

I see that we leave space allocated even if we don't show the bar. It's the same in MC33 and MC32 so has not changed for a while.

Thinking more I'll try to make the space go away in a coming build. Thanks for the prompt.

I first noticed the alphabet action about 2 weeks ago, so it goes back to at least 33.0.43.

I observed (and still do) a threshold number of albums = 10, independent of how many are displayed on a line:

<10 albums in an artist directory and there is no alphabet when opening that artist.

>= 10, get the alphabet.

Found it surprising, but got used to it very quickly.  Also, once in the artist directory, the alphabet letters switched from finding artist name to finding first album with that letter at start of the album name.  If no album starts with a particular letter, then highlight jumps to first album.  Makes sense.

Yes, the code shows when there are more than ten items. It was still leaving space even when it didn't show. That's what I'm going to try changing. Thanks.

Even though you allocated space for that bar beginning with MC 32, something has changed very recently in how it behaves.  The reason I say that is because when I double click the album art to show the filelist in the bottom pane, all the covers suddenly shift up (due to the blank bar disappearing and the covers move to the vacated space).  That behavior is definitely new.  There is zero chance I never noticed that abrupt jump thruout all of MC32 and thru to this version of MC33. Mark indicated he noticed it for the first time in version 30.0.43, so maybe that or a slightly earlier version had unintended consequences to the alphabet bar?

That said, since you're going to remove the blank allocated space anyway, I guess it does not matter.  But the info may turn out to be a useful in the event you encounter issues while making this latest update.
