TV tuner rescan stops at channel 13
« on: December 16, 2024, 11:36:11 am »

I did a TV rescan after updating to MC33 and after scanning to 13 it jumped to 70 and showed scanning complete. I had 60 channels before the rescan and now only have one (CH12). I'm using a Hauppauge quadHD USB tuner with latest driver, 21JUNE2024. Computer is Win 11 Pro V24H2 updated 04DEC2024. I did a reinstall of MC33 on this computer, and did a fresh first time install on another computer that has same Win 11 Pro version and has same problem. The tuner works and scans correctly using the latest version of WinTV 10software that came with the USB tuner. Attached is the log file made after doing the rescan. Any help appreciated.

I am sorry that you are having issues. The channel scanning code has not been changed for years. I am really puzzled.

The log file shows the following:

We started with the lowest physical channel (2) and call SeekUp which would lock onto the next available channel.
For the first 8 or 9 such calls, we did not get any lock. Each time we checked the physical channel and it sequentially incremented, from 2 to 10.
The next SeekUp brought a lock, and its physical channel was 70! This gave you 5 subchannels, among which was CBS.
The next SeekUp ended in failure because there were no more channels above what was found.

You see, the system call SeekUp skipped a bunch of channels, going from channel 10 directly to channel 70.

Thanks for checking it out. I think the CH70 scan brought up physical CH12, as that is correct for CBS. I had to edit the sub channels because they were on physical CH20.

Will a restore backup library from MC31 bring back the original channels? I made this backup before installing MC33. I already manually added many of the popular channels and don't want to lose them doing a library restore.

Try powering your TV device off and back on, and then rescanning.

I already took it a step further by installing MC33 on a different computer with an older dual Hauppauge tuner and it did the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the latest windows 11 24H2 update has something to do with it. Some of the other software on both computers have been doing little strange thing here and there after this update early December. I do have an old windows 7 computer I could test it out on if think it would help.

The scanned data have the following numbers: 70 (12-1), meaning it has physical channel 70, major channel 12, minor channel 1. You also have other channels with the same physical channel: 12-2, 12-3, 64-2, 64-3

Yes it should. When you install MC33, the data should have been migrated. Doing a restore again should bring back the old data. Backup MC33 library first, so you will have your manually added channels saved somewhere.

It will help deciding whether Windows updates were the calprit. It won't be conclusive as there is also the possibility of Hauppauge drivers doing it.

I further tested by installing same MC33 on the Windows 7 computer, using the same Quad Hauppauge USB tuner and the channel scan worked correctly. I noticed the tuner driver was an older version from 2020 so I further tested by using this old driver on a Windows 11 computer with recent 24H2 update. This time doing the channel scan it went to CH14 then jumped to end. It didn't find the CBS station on physical channel 12, but did find a group of other stations on Physical Ch15. They wouldn't play (hung at "waiting for signal clock") because it showed physical Ch70 instead of 15, but did have the correct Major/Minor channel and TSID, so changing 70 to 15 got that group of channels to play.

The attached log is from the Windows 11 computer with Ch14 to end jump using the same Hauppauge driver as the Windows 7 computer that the auto scan worked correctly on. Hope this helps solve the mystery.
