asking JRiver to down mix 7.1 files to 5.1
« on: January 09, 2025, 06:25:17 pm »

I have ripped the new Elton John "Diamonds" Atmos files from a Blu Ray disk using MKV and DVD Audio Extractor. This always works well for 5.1 Blu Ray disks but I haven't been able to get my JRiver based music server to fold down (down mix) the resulting 8 channels to 5.1. Everything sounds good but those two extra channels are just missing.  Does anyone have advice for me on how to ask JRiver to do this?  BTW, I am going directly out of my Mac mini NAS via USB into an Exasound E38 DAC - then directly out of that to the amplifier (no pre pro).  Thanks for any help!

Just pick the hardware configuration of your speakers in DSP Studio > Output Format. JRSS mixing should do a great job down converting.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the reply.  I just tried every option I could think of on the "Channels" setup:
5.1 - no extra channels, 2 extra channels
7.1 - no extra channels
both above adding JRSS mixing on and off.
I still am missing the 2 channels that need to be added to my surround back channels.  There is mention on that page of matching (or not) the input channel set up to output set up but I don't know where the input channel set up would be.  Also, the Channels set up says "Source" channels so I'm not certain if putting 5.1 there is for output or input.  That's why I tried both 5.1 and 7.1.  Thanks.

I just made a 7.1 file, then played it at 5.1 with JRSS mixing. It properly runs code to mix the rear surrounds and surrounds together.

Thanks, Matt. Would it be too much to ask how you have configured the dsp studio page?  Or, a screen shot?

BTW, in trying to get this to work I ended up upgrading my MC31 to MC32 today and my player will no longer play my .dsf (SACD) files referring me to the DSP studio.  But I believe I have returned everything to the way I had it (simple enough).  I've been playing these files since version MC26.

Thanks.
