Volume levelling etc
« on: January 26, 2025, 04:32:08 am »

Hi folks,
I've had a look at a number of threads pertaining to CR ripping and volume levelling, but I don't think that they completely deal with my issue.
I'm in the process of slowly compiling a file of favourite tracks (FLAC format) to play on a "hifi' boombox that I made last year. Although I rip tracks using MC, I use another app on an Android tablet to play back through the 'box. So, my problem is the usual one of inconsistent playback volume for tracks taken from different albums. I've got a handle on using a FLAC - FLAC conversion using DSP with volume levelling set. This works fine and I can batch the 200 or so FLACS I have for volume levelled conversion to use on my boombox. However, from what I can gather, the entire batch of FLAC files would be scanned in order to arrive at an appropriate value for levelling to accomplish the transfer. So, in future, how would I go about adding a new FLAC file to my converted collection and have it levelled to the same value as the files already converted? Am I better off normalizing my current collection of FLAC files to a nominal value (I presume there is a way of carrying out FLAC-FLAC with normalization?) and then when I rip new tracks in future I simply normalize them to the same value and they will play nicely with the tracks already converted?
Just one final question on a completely different matter that pertains to my 'real' hifi, not the boombox. For playback I use DSP and in order to limit the voltage from my DAC to my homemade (valve) pre-amp I would like to use the pre-amp slider in the MC graphic equalizer. Is this a bad move - does reducing the pre-amp slider to a low value cause a degradation in sound quality?
Any tips or information would be gratefully received, thanks in anticipation!
