MP3 playback producing artifacts 9.0.88
« on: January 08, 2003, 11:19:20 am »

I have noticed that some of my mp3 songs produce artifacts using 9.0.88. At first I though it was the mp3 files themselves, but decided to play them using 8.0.393 and the artifacts are not there. I then reinstalled 9.0.88 and the artifacts came back.
I have a particular song that i kept track of and can easily reproduce the problem. Is the mp3 player identical in both releases? Can I send you the file or somehow get it to you so you can hear it for yourself?
If you can otherwise locate it, it's Raul Malo-I said I Love You [192kbps] and it seems to 'skip' at 2:47 using 9.0.88.

Try changing playback options.  Wav out and Direct Sound, for example.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I tried to switch from wave out to direct sound and back again - restarting MC each time.
I also tried adjusting the 'settings' for each Mode as well and also restarted MC each time.
Nothing changed except the time at which it 'skipped' - seemingly due to the buffer size. It changed from 2:47 to 2:52.
Is there someway you can listen to it?

Did you try the setting for "more skip resistant<>more responsive"?

Did you try encoding the file again?

Jim,
Yes, that's the Settings button. I tried from one end to the other with no positive results.

I have emailed you the MP3 file. Hopefully it will arrive.

I got that skip glitch to.  also check your DSP settings, if you are using more then one:

For Ex:

See how I have DFX and JR's Effects on. Turn one of them off, or turn off the environment setting in the effects section. Doing Multiple DSP's at once choke the sound processor up.

I've noticed mp3 problems before with other builds. Sometimes the playback would be choppy. It was only on certain mp3 files (like low bitrate, <128). I've checked every settting I could do. Played in WMP/Winamp etc and they were fine.

I'll have to do some more testing with them.

Tried setting all of the DSP Studio boxes to unchecked and it still skipped. I then tried re-encoding it from fixed 192k to vbr low/fast and it ended up at 114k. The skip disappeared. Don't know it the bit rate changed it or simply the re-encoding changed it.
It may even have been the mp3 encoder that was used originally [don't know what it was] and that LAME eliminated it.
I have no idea, but I doubt I will re-encode every one I find in this situation [though it would be better than skipping].

BTW, how do folks ad the "Listening to..." stuff at the bottom of these posts?

Right click on Playing Now in the tree.  You can copy from there.  Then paste here.

Any chance of having this added to the right-click system tray menu?
