Is it the ripping or encoding that's slow? Try ripping to uncomressed wav to get your max rip speed, then try converting to whatever format you use to get your max encoding speed. Watch CPU utilization for both.

Ripping w/o encoding sped up the process but only ~5.5x. Is this normal or does my computer just suck?

well the Lame encoder is rather slow, with a 447mhz computer that does not help much.

you know you can't play many new games on that.

I have a 1.8ghz and it is so slow, and the crapy video board (on the mother board) does not help.

I have a game min 700mhz, but playing it with this intel video is just plain poor.

Windows 98 isn't exactly a performance booster either

What's the CPU doing while you're ripping with no encoding? What kind of controller is the CD attached to? Is DMA turned on?

Also, try converting the ripped .WAV file to .MP3 and see what encoding speed you get on your PC. I'm betting you get around 2.9x or so...I have the same speed PII with a better Plextor CD burner with DMA enabled (better = faster audio ripping speed of 20X).

I just read that the Sony drive is terrible at audio ripping and your 5.5x comment shows that...plus, you may not have DMA enabled on you IDE controller for the drive (if not, you are sucking more CPU cycles too).

For the record, DMA is enabled on both CD drives. I think my computer just needs to be put out of her misery . . .

I too was concerned about ripping speed. I have an old system 400Mhz P2, 384Mb Win 2K. I just bought a new PlexWriter 48/24/48 CD writer. I was disappointed to see that the speed never seemed to get above 5X or so when ripping to MP3. I also have Nero which seemed much faster, so I thought I'd do the pepsi challenge.

I put in a music CD "Heros Are Hard to Find", Fleetwood Mac. and let Nero go halfway thru the copy. Basically reading the data off the CD and writing it in wav format on the hard drive. Time 1:40.

Then I set up Media Center (9.0.88) to rip to uncompressed wave format and unchecked simultaneous rip and encode. There was no normalization. Time 2:10

So it takes 30% longer to rip with Media Center than it did with Nero.

And I did a burning test too.
I burned a CD from wave format with Nero and Media Center. The CD was completely full and it took both applications approx. 4 minutes. They were within 3 seconds of each other.

the MC9 encoder is not the fastest so the ripping speed of 1.5 could be normal ! The fastest speed I have seen in MC9 was 4.9 with Internal MP3 Normal Quality at the end of ripping.
With High Speed Ripping I see 4.9in the middle and 5.8 at the end of the song.
The encoder is just LAME as you mentioned already :-)
I am working with a PIII 1.1GHz 512MB Notebook and according www.pcpitstop.com all is OK with my system.

On my system I have rechaed a max ripping speed of x9 with the Musicmatch (7.x) Encoder at 128 kBit. They use the Fraunhofer FastEnc Encoder. The Quality is just fine for me.

I am very interested in a faster ripping speed. If you see a chance please tell me.

Ripping to .wav is around 2x. Encoding is about the same.

That's kind of odd. I have an OLD 333 PII, and typically I get around 8x-10x ripping to wav. Encoding is another ball game altogether.

Not that odd. The type of IDE controller, what else it connected to it, drivers, and the OS itself can make a big difference in ripping speed.

I have an Athlon 1800+/512Mb RAM with an Iomega 40x read drive (actually a LiteOn in disguise). Maybe that sucks too. Media Center rarely rips to MP3 above 5x for me.

In the same configuration, RealOne used to rip/encode at up to 15x after an initial run-up (for similar VBRs).

I accept MC9's relative slowness at ripping because of its other benefits, but I would like it to rip faster nevertheless.
