Sounds like an installation problem. You might try rebooting, uninstalling, then reinstalling.

I am unable to rip.

I've posted my problem before with no reponse (http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1038883837).  I've uninstalled, reinstalled and rebooted a number of times.  I am unable to rip.

The error window: "Cannot create CD ripping control."

Have you tried to uninstall first before reinstalling?  If you just try to install over a bad install, it may not correct the problem.  I would say reboot, uninstall, reboot and reinstall the latest release. .  If that doesn't work, you have some corrupt files elsewhere preventing you from ripping.

MC has an Uninstall program.  If you are using XP, just click Start, then All Programs, then look for Media Center 9.0 and select Uninstall Media Center.

I uninstalled, I've done a regsweep, I've deleted every JRiver file and registry entry.

I reinstalled 9.0.85.

During installation I CONTINUE to get this error: "cda_in.dll failed to install."

THEN:  another error window immediately following saying: "Packet failed to install."

Then installation proceeds and everything seems to work BUT FOR ripping.  I've tried different cds . . .

Please advise as I am at a complete loss.

Check in your Media Jukebox program directory for a file called "cdripper.ocx". If it's there, right click it and choose properties. It should have a creation date of November 21, 2002, 4:14:20PM. The size should be 446,464 bytes. When you click on the Version tab, the version should be 1.3.105.0.
Try registering it. Double click on cdripper.ocx and when it asks what program to run on it, choose c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe. It should pop up a message that ends with the word "succeeded".

Found cdripper.ocx

Creation date: Thursday 12/05/02 9.19.26 am
Modified: Monday 11/25/02 3.15.14 pm

I opened cdripper.ocx with c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe

I got the "Succeeded" message.

I launched Media Center and inserted a CD.

Same error: "Cannot Create Ripping Control"

Additional advice?  Please note: I was able to use previous versions of MJ to rip . . .

Don't you think this problem has to do with the failure to install the "cda_in.dll?"  Packet failed to install. . .

Just a "typo" with that file name? I can only find one called "in_cda.dll" in the plugins directory.

Did you try d'loading a fresh copy of MediaCenter90085.exe?

it was a typo.

the plugin that fails to load is in_cda.dll

The name of that file makes me suspect that it has something to do with CDA's and possibly RIPPING cdas . . .

Yes.  I uninstalled MC and removed the original .exe I downloaded (in addition to sweeping all MC drive and registry entries).  I then downloaded a "fresh" MC .exe, tried to reinstall and had the same problem.  (Then I followed your instructions as noted above --> same problem) . . .

in_cda.dll is only for digital playback of CD's, it doesn't affect ripping. But, "Load Library\ . . . CDRIPPER.OCX) failed" is definitely a problem. Does this message show up during the install process? If you delete the cdripper.ocx file from the MJ program directory and re-install, do you still get the message?

Are you familiar with viewing the windows registry?
If so, run the regedit program, click on "My Computer", select Edit/Find..., then type in "cdripper.ocx" (without the quotes, uncheck "Match whole string only", leave Keys,Values,Data checked and click "Find Next".

It should show you values like:
C:\PROGRA~1\JRiver~1\MEDIAC~1\cdripper.ocx
assuming this is where you installed Media Center. If you see "MEDIAJ" instead of "MEDIAC", there must be an installation problem.

Also, right click on your cdripper.ocx file and choose properties. Verify that the file size is 446,464 bytes, then click the version tab and verify it is version 1.3.105.0.
Also do a search on you entire computer for any other copies of cdripper.ocx. If you find any, delete them.

Thanks,

ok.

there is no registry entry for cdripper.ocx.  I searched the registry as instructed (i am familiar with regedit).

cdripper.ocx properties: 446,464 bytes; v. 1.3.105

There are no other cdripper.ocx files.  Only the one in theMC directory.

SHould we look at ActiveX settings?

Try the latest build.  9.0.87.  A lot of things have changed with the way we handle the registry and there may still be some loose ends.

Even though JohnT says the in_cda.dll problem is unrelated, see if you can solve it.  The only thing I can think of is that the plugins folder has another copy that is read only.  Can you see if you verify this?

If you're not getting a good install of that, there may be other things not installed.

I did a search of my registry for the cdripper.ocx and it's there.

Are you running as a user with permissions to write the registry.

I've mentioned other software.  Have you done a thorough job of looking at what else is running?  We've had weird problems with things like virus checkers, firewalls, and CD writing software.

I know you think it is MC, and it could be, but if it were, it's likely things would be much noisier here.  Please look hard at other possibilities.

I move in_cda.dll found in a windows dir to C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Plugins.

I did a regedit search as instructed and found cdripper.ocx.  However, it is not at C:\PROGRA~1\JRiver~1\MEDIAC~1\cdripper.ocx.  It is software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer.

The cdripper.ocx file is found at C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center.  It has a MS icon on it (maybe not recognized) and is 446,464 bytes, created 12/06/02, modified 11/21/02.  Version 1.3.105, Product name value: JRiver CDRipper ActiveX Control.

I deleted a cdripper file found in windows\recent.

Virus software is disabled.  No firewall.  No cdwriter software running. (No msconfig->startup changes since v. 8.x).

I have permissions to write the registry.

I'm going to reboot and let you know if there is a fix.

I understand that it would be "noisier" in here if this were a pervasive problem and I apologize for burining up the board with what is, ostensibly, a local issue BUT . . . that aint gonna get my music ripped. ;)

thx

No fix upon reboot.

Sparta, which encoder did you download?  Will you let me know the url?  (I assume its on the MC plugins page but . . .)

MC doesn't generally crash during rip malfunctions like these: http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1038673066

Another quiet weekend at JRiver tech support . . .

Just a brief update -- i reinstalled 8.0.393 and ripping works fine, therefore the ripping malfunction must be the result of a bug in v. 9.x.

DC i think i was premature on that comment.

I found out later that It seems to be a bug in the latest Build that is crashing MJ.

But downloading from the web page did fix the error about the ripping control.

JimH pulled the latest build so they are aware of a Problem.

I am sure they will get it sorted out.

Techs are overpaid ($70/hr+ @ my law office) so they are THERE when there is a problem! Virus, proxy server, upgrades...we can all watch a load-in bar move horizontally(most of us do it for free).

I love MJ and have been touting it for over a year. Siren bailed on me & Music Match is still on my daughter's machine because I paid for that, too.

First I upgraded to "Media Center" and had it expire. After an initial panic attack, I found the updated version and thought all was well. WRONG!

I tried to rip a CD (1) and got the WinXP "send problem report to MS" screen. NYC bouncers are more subtle when they throw you out of a club! Reboot and same problem.

I uninstalled 9.whocares and put 8 back on and all is fine.

Maybe the code writers will work NEXT weekend.

BTW  I was a "tenderfoot" in the Boy Scouts in 1965.
I paid for your product, so maybe you could treat me as a customer in your forum "hierarchy".

After all, if all was well I would not be here in the first place!  Who's the "tenderfoot"?

Thanks for the reply, Sparticus,
I share your optimism for a great product's future...with a little hesitation thrown in.

BTW- didn't mean to come off as pretentious with the "my law firm" reference. It's the law firm that pays me! (I'm not a lawyer..although I WAS a " tenderfoot" in 1965).

MC must rip or it's worthless to me. I'm still content with 8 until it does!  :-/

edit: Shuffle mode no longer shows a shuffled file list- This I HATE! >:(

If the correct entry isn't in the registry, that is definitely why you're getting the "Cannot create CD ripping control." error. The question is why MJ can't create the registry entry upon installation (or when you run regsvr32.exe on the cdripper.ocx file). I just tested on a clean Win98 system. I ran the MJ 9 install and it created this entry in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{86A28D05-84DB-4559-9C6B-56652715F2E0}
With a Default key value of:
JRiver CDRipper Control
A sub-folder of this key called InprocServer32 has a default key value of:
C:\PROGRA~1\JRiver~1\MEDIAC~1\CDRIPPER.OCX

Ripping worked fine. I then deleted this registry entry and tried to rip and got the "Cannot create CD ripping control." error. I then double clicked on the cdripper.ocx file (in the MJ program directory) and chose c:\windows\regsvr32.exe as the program to run on it. A pop-up box appeared with a "succeeded" message. Then I checked the registry and the above entries were there again. Ripping worked fine after this.

Can you think of any software you have running that might prevent registry entries from being created? Please try the regsvr32.exe program again (double click the cdripper.ocx file), then look in the registry in the location listed above. If you don't see the entry, send me an email and I'll send you a version of cdripper.ocx with diagnostic messages when the registry entry creation takes place.

The in_cda.dll is also a problem, but unrelated to ripping. We can get that solved after the ripping problem is solved.

Thanks,
John T.

We've had several unexplained problems like this turn out to be other software.  Even disabling firewalls and virus checkers wasn't enough.  They had to be uninstalled.  One version of Nero created a similar problem.  Updating the version cured it.

I'm not saying that this is the problem in this case, but it is possible.

Do you remember when you downloaded the version that gave you this problem? The build on Friday (9.0.87) had a fix for this and I was wondering if you had used that build or an earlier one. The 9.0.87 was pulled because of other problems so a  new one will be out later today.

THx.  I'll give it a shot tonight.  It's still unclear why the ripping control works fine in v. 8 and can't be created in v. 9.

I've uninstalled programs, cleaned my drives and swept reg entries with no luck so far but I'll try again tonight and concentrate on cdripper.ocx and regsvr32 . . .

Do you remember when you downloaded the version that gave you this problem? The build on Friday (9.0.87) had a fix for this and I was wondering if you had used that build or an earlier one. The 9.0.87 was pulled because of other problems so a  new one will be out later today.

I think the version I installed was the one right after the version that expired.
I'll give the new version a shot a get back to you.

Thanks for the response, John. 8)

Last night: I swept my registry.  I uninstalled JRiver files and entries.  No virus, firewall or CD writer software is running.  I REINSTALLED WINDOWS.

This morning: I installed v. 9.0.88.  (Of course, I got the error message that in_cda.dll failed to load, Packet not installed).  I tried to rip a cd.  I get the same error: Failed to Create Ripping Control.

Techs are overpaid ($70/hr+ @ my law office)

Wait... you work at a law office and you think the TECHS are overpaid?!?

I can't remember ever sending a bill to a client for $200 because I spent an hour "thinking" about their problem.

Please send me an email and I'll send you a cdripper.ocx file that will print out error messages if it can't "register" itself.

Thanks,

JohnT,

Followed your instructions re "Open with" cdripper.ocx.  Here's the error message:

LoadLibrary("C:\ProgramFiles\J River\Media Center\cdripper.ocx") failed. GetLastError returns 0x00000485.

That error message means a system DLL is not being found.
I sent you another email with info on how to find which system DLL is the culprit.

JohnT,

Thanks for your assistance.  The ripping function seems to be working now.  I leave on short notice and didn't get back until last night.  Installed last night . . .

Thx again for the input
