AVI problem?
« on: November 09, 2002, 12:55:21 am »

I'm running MJ 90074. I've just tried to play a couple of avi video files but I only get the soundtrack, no picture. It's the same with the other media players on my system (WMP and RealOne).

These files previously played back fine, prior to me installing MJ.

I remember once I had a video file with a .wma extension that only gave sound, and changing it's extension to .wmv fixed the problem. Has MJ somehow changed how .avi files are registered?

Cunningly replying to my own message to hopefully put it near the top again :D Posted it at the weekend so thought it might have been missed.

Any ideas on my AVI problem?

Cheers.

PS: I tried uninstalling MJ and the problem remains. Since installed 90075, still same. Not tried 90076 yet.

Did these files exist prior to installing MJ9 and they played fine? If yes, then I do not know.

On the other hand if these files were created by recording TV with MJ9, then it is most likely due to video codec choice. Try selecting a different video compressor, or selecting "No Compression" and see if it works.

These files were part of an Enhanced CD (Avril Lavigne actually). They played fine before I installed MJ9, though I can't confirm whether they worked immediately before installing as it was a few weeks earlier that I last played them. They seem to play okay via the CD's interface application, so I'm guessing the files are OK but somehow a setting has been changed that makes all desktop media players think avi files are audio-only.

The latest build of MJ breaks AVI playback. (Windows is always using one of our filters when it shouldn't)

Next build will fix it...

Great. I'm going to install beta 3 tonight anyway, but are you saying it will be fixed in beta 4?

And by "MJ breaks AVI playback" do you mean you've seen what I've seen, ie it plays audio but no video?

Thanks for the great support!

Hi,

I've also experienced the same problem with AVI, especially for video taken by digital cameras.

This is because of the AVI CODEC, and is not supplied with Windows.

I have to purchase a CODEC to make it work

2 CODECs are available
