Media Jukebox 9 Preview XI
« on: October 18, 2002, 02:05:25 pm »

There's an update version of the Media Jukebox 9.0 preview here, but FIRST PLEASE READ THIS:

IMPORTANT-- This is only a preview -- some things don't work, some things crash, and your data may not be safe. Don't use this preview with files that can't be replaced. If you don't consider yourself an expert with Media Jukebox, please wait for a later release. Backup your database (and files) before doing anything else.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download the preview here:

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox90068.exe

Changes

1. Changed: New search control now used in Quick Find, View Scheme Setup, and View Scheme Group Setup.
2. Fixed: Many bugs and quirks with the new search control.
3. Fixed: The combination of view searches and library tree searches was not done intelligently. (so sometimes all hits wouldn't show up)
4. Fixed: F5 would not always refresh the view properly.
5. Fixed: Lots of little things probably not worth mentioning...

Keep in mind that at this stage in the game, we're getting more bug reports than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help, support, and patience.

If you make changes to Id3 Tags in a Plug-In and jump to another plug-in mj will not first save the changes that were made in the first plug-in.

only when you come back out of the plug-ins will it save.

I would think it would be best once you Jump to another plugin mj should make the tag changes that were done in the first plugin.

Small thing but thumbnail view ordering still seems quite haphazard.  I saw a post here where all the cover art was neatly in alphbetical order. Never happens.

Any thoughts?

The same here. The order is correct in the first 2 list styles, but when you go to the third (album view) it isn't sorted. And it's the same in every Media View View Scheme.

In MJ settings, check how you have sort order set.

The setting is correct 'cause there's only one view that doesn't show correctly, the album view (when you see only one image for album). The other views(song views with letters or cover view of all songs) are show correct.

Auto rip needs some tweaking yet. Doesn't seem to auto rip. Could be me, more later. Also closed MJ when selecting the 'X' instead of cancel.

Tags got hammered when the 'library update' happened on the initial install. Some tracks now have the track number included in the song name. And it is random. Not all show this. The cd's were ripped with MJ. I do not have MJ set to show track #'s in this fashion. Are you able to reproduce this?

Track Ratings - Can there be an open discussion about the way this is handled. I'm still holding out for "1" as being the top rating. It makes sense if you are using this like a Top 40 chart. What is the most coveted spot on that chart? Sure ain't 40. The reason I'm bringing this up is because the Auto Smartlists show 4-5 as being the picks of choice.

There's a good chance that MJ 9 may move to visual stars (or better yet, jukeboxes) in the lists.  In that case, a 4 or 5 should make more sense.  A bigger debate is that a lot of people want a wider range. (i.e. 1 to 10)  Maybe half jukeboxes would work...

Help us out:  how and when should it remember the last search?  It got too confusing when we added search capabilities to everywhere in the library.  Any advice is welcome.  (other than "make the behaviour optional"  ;D)

Carried over from Preview X thread:

Quote
2.  All of my coverart was stored internally and the only art remaining after the conversion is that associated with .mpc files.  All of the mp3 cover images are absent.

3.  Notes are absent in all files.

Shelly,
Try rebooting and installing again.  Don't uninstall first.

Jim

I rebooted and reinstalled Preview X without any resulting change in the status of cover art and notes.  Rebooted again and installed Preview XI with same results.  I restored v8 library without success.

I can't find the Recently Imported playlist.  There's an icon for it in the toolbar, but it's not listed in any of the menus.

I think it is a smartlist now.  Should be listed in audio smartlists.

Adam

Found it.  Thanks Adam.

However, the option to clear the recently imported list on exit does not work nor does the recently imported button on the toolbar function.  Now that there are 3 recently imported lists, to which list does the toolbar button and the clear list option apply?

I know this may sound odd, but i havent run into any bug yet on this build, but then again i never really ran into many on the other builds of 9 or 8, anyhow a quick suggestion. Make the search bar removable. Of course im sure you guys already thought about that, so ill leave it at that. Great job guys.

Cycling through playing now options is still causing MJ to crash.  Here is my system info:

Media Jukebox PLUS 9.0.68
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1539 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 392 MB, Free - 113 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106

Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

I can also send the Crash file from XP if this will help to debug

It appears to be when the change goes from None to Images.  Could be a problem with finding my image files.  I will try reimporting my Image Library and see what happens...

Reimported library.  Still getting the same problem.  It appears to be if you are changing to the image view as the image is changing it crashes the program...not sure.  I will keep testing.

Matt,

OK, this I would agree with. As a visual indicator of ratings, the more stars, jukeboxes, aliens, etc. would make sense. Just the numeric thing is bass ackwards from my standpoint. Thanks for at least considering this.

And throw me on the bandwagon for more flexibility with rating choices. Any chance if you go the stars route that there may be the option for its use? Possibly an advanced choice for numbers or icons? My thinking is if you have an increase in the ratings options, a lot of icons would be taking up valuable screen space. Numbers don't. Just curious.

Matt I would like MJ to remember what I type in find.

If I am working on some files and just happen to click out of there and go back to find I have to now re-enter all the commands that got me the files I was working on.

And now since I can't paste the info back to find I now have to re-type all the info back in and sometimes that can be quite irritating.

Can anyone confirm the cycling error above as I want to know if it is just my machine.  To repeat:

1. Load some images into playing now.
2. Minimize back to the main window.  The images should be cycling in playing now.
3. Start some audio files playing.
4. Go to playing now and try and cycle through the view options.  At some point MJ crashes.  Sometimes it is the first time it gets to images, othertimes it will get ehre once but will crash on the second or third cycle.

I think the File Naming conventions are messing with the tags from the above post. Funny that it's random though. Easy enough to edit. Should have mentioned they were ripped from 8.

REQUEST: Any chance of making the Convert Files window minimize without doing it to MJ as a whole? Like the ripping window that can be minimized without taking MJ with it.

Sorting by Artist-Year-Album-Track# arranges everything right in the list. But in the tree view it maintains alphabetical *(Albums)* order yet. So the 'Year' criteria gets tossed out the window when looking at the tree. Any chance that this order can be kept the same as the list?

I just wanted to post that in version 9 when i attach my Nomad Zen it crashes.  Not sure what would cause this but the plugin works fine in version 8.  I would rather keep using 9 so a fix would be appreciated or a solution.

Thanks,

Just had a quick look at it...
Looks interesting with the image and video stuff.

1) what happened to custom 1-3 fields?

2) will all the other fields, such as notes, lyrics etc be saved in the db, which will enable mpc guys like me to use that, or only in the tag?

When clicking on a playlist, album, or what have you, it takes a very VERY long time to populate the right pane, as each song seems to be inspected individually.  If I click on something else, and then back on the first album, it loads up faster.  But still, the original delay is a bummer.

1) I have problems with just looking at the visualisation - MJ crashes.

2) When I put a CD into the drive with MJ running, MJ crashes.

3) Auto-albums don't work well yet -- I have a classical album with two composers which is being listed under "Single artist (incomplete)". In fact, I only have two albums listed under each of "Multiple artists"...

4) Doing anything while playing music results in the music "slowing down" and becoming choppy. I hope this will come right!

5) I know that this is impossible to get 100% accurate, but the BPM analysis is fairly often wrong and reports values of 2x or 0.5x the actual BPM.

6) What does intensity tell you? I can't seem to hear much of a similarity between "Intense" music and non-"Intense" music! ;)

Thanks for the brilliant software! :)

Matt,
Pretty please could you make it possible for both v8 and v9 to run side by side?
I LOVE v8 and use it daily for my albums. It is solid and reliable and all my plugins work great on it. It's a great jukebox.

I am dying to be able to play with the new features being added to v9 and to test it and give suggestions, feedback etc and help it develop but am not willing to give up having a great jukebox with everything functioning properly (v8).

If it is impossible for these two to run side by side or is a huge amount of work then please just say and I'll shut up. If it's not though, I desperately beg that it's one of the main features you add to the next version.
People might even want to run v8 and v9 side by side once v9 is final anyway for other reasons and so it would seem to make sense to allow them both to be on the same system at the same time.

Problems fixed (ones I reported, anyway)...

  • Column resizing still not working.  Auto-resize is off.  Only saves the first of 2 resize operations.  For example, resize a column and change views and the size isn't saved.  Resize a column, then immediately resize it again and the first resize is saved.  Fixed

New Problems.

  • I started playing with the Auto Album Artist thingie.   I took a mix cd that was previously "Various Artists" for the artist and renamed the artist for each of the tracks to the actual artist keeping the same album title for all.  The Auto Album Artist picked this up nicely and I got a new entry in the media view for "(Multiple Artists)".  The problem is that when I then renamed the tracks so they fall in the correct artist directories, I lost the "(Multiple Artist)" tree entry and I now get single album/tracks under the original artist.  Also, I just discovered that those that I renamed now show up as incomplete albums.

  • You can't "group" album artist in a view scheme.  You can check the "Add a grouping level..." box but the size field is not unprotected and the box check isn't remembered.  So I can't use both the cool new grouping feature and the cool new auto album artist feature at the same time unless I create 2 view schemes.

  • I get
Application popup: MEDIA JUKEBOX: Media Jukebox.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00535140" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
exceptions whenever I edit smartlist sort criteria and enter an unrecognized database field. Given my typing skills, I get this a lot.

Problems remaining open...

  • Using the ASIO DirectX Driver, tracks won't automatically advance.  When track 1 finishes, track 2 starts permanently buffering.  (may be creative problem, can't tell)

  • Using the Creative ASIO driver, I get an immediate blank popup when playback starts.  (may be creative problem, can't tell)

  • If you right click on the drop target and select "External Tool", then "Configure External Tools..." it literally puts the string "Configure External Tools..." in the drop target.

  • In "File Naming and Location" you can't enter paths with leading or trailing periods.  I.E.  If I try to enter a path for track images like "m:\.coverart" the period gets stripped out as soon as I move the cursor out of the entry field. Any valid file system path should be allowed.

  • When collapsing "Auto Smartlists (audio)" after selecting one of the random or favorite lists, the app hangs for about 10 seconds while spinning the cpu at 100%. (maybe not a "problem", but it's still a pain)

  • CD-Text is not being read

  • For data CDs the directory structure is literally written as "ARTIST\ALBUM" instead of the actual artist and album names.

Bugs

Import
  • The majority of files not in the library at the time that I upgraded from V. 8 will not import.  The detail message reads "Did not find any new files to import", regardless if files were imported or not.   If import works, the reported number is incorrect.  For example, I imported 13 files; MJ reported that it attempted to import 12 files and that it actually imported 13.
  • Attempts to import while in thumbnail views causes MJ to lock up.

Images
  • The problem with random sorting is present in all views.
  • Unable to save images to some files.  Within the same album, some images are stored internally and some externally.  Internally stored images may be lost at random.
  • The image tasklist does not always accurately report those files that are missing artwork.

Balloon tips
  • Balloon tips in thumbnail views are not sticking long enough to view, especially those on the right side of the screen.

Requested enhancements:
  • Customization of thumbnail text descriptions.  For example, when viewing thumbnails of tracks, it would be helpful to see the track number.  The text under album thumbnails should wrap, so that, the album title is visible.
  • Please restore the pick list for the genre field, so that we don't have to complete the full name.

After adding back the album art to over 10,000 files today,  it's likely that I'm half blind, but I can't find the analyze replay gain tool.  Where'd it go???

It's under the main menu/tools/analyze audio.  Should probably be under the right-click/tools menu as well but it isn't.

Thanks, RemyJ, I found it.

Analyze audio should also be able to be accessed via the "Tool" button in file properties.

Bug:
Non-media files randomly are added to the media library, such as "C:\Documents and Settings\Shelly\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\HOTSYNC.lnk".

Quicktime : Transitioning FROM a .mov file to any other type of file causes MJ to crash. This happens on regular and manual transitions.

Hi! :)

There's still in a windowed movie or visualization no pause-sign (those 2 lines).

You can win over the MusicMatch Juke Box junkies for good if you add support for MMJB tags & allow users to view their music library, current playlist, album cover or visualizations & audi controls at ONCE!

Here is what the ultimate MJ interface would incorporate...

Hmmm, I chose MJ because I prefer functionality over fancy skins. Doesnt look good to me. But I admit the ability to view playing now and the library in separate panes would be good.

  • Sorting by filename returns the following results...

    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict (Music Only)\01 - English Boy.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict\01 - English Boy.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict\02 - Meher Baba M3.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict (Music Only)\02 - Meher Baba M3.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict (Music Only)\03 - Let's Get Pretentious.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict\03 - Let's Get Pretentious.mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict (Music Only)\04 - Meher Baba M4 (Signal Box).mp3
    C:\usr\music\Pete Townshend\Psychoderelict\04 - Meher Baba M4 (Signal Box).mp3

  • There's an inconsistency between "last played" and "number of plays".  I have last played times within the past 24 hours that have numberplays set to 0.  The "Top Hits -- listened to today" smartlist highlights this.

  • Discs with only 2 tracks are showing up as incomplete albums:

Bob Dylan, Love and Theft (Disc 2)
Mother Love Bone, Mother Love Bone Bonus Disc
     Sade, Lovers Live (Bonus CD)

(The fact that the word "Love" appears in each album name has to be a coincidence, doesn't it?)

I have been playing quite a bit with the bpm analysis and while I can forgive MJ for not getting the answers always 100% on the button, it is interesting to see how it gets confused between 3/4 music (ie: a waltz) and assigns a tempo value of 1.33 or 0.67 times the actual tempo. It seems to do this quite regularly.

Another interesting one was a Blink-182 song which got assigned a tempo of 54 (sorry, don't have the name handy) when in actual fact it was closer to 212...

Is there any way to have MJ show it's confidence in the value that it gives for tempo? It is quite important for some tasks (eg: I want a 'slow music' smartlist which I don't have to worry about getting any Blink-182!) that the results are accurate. It is aways possible to double check the ones that aren't very certain by either listening to them and checking for oneself, or ignoring anything from a smartlist until its reliability can be ascertained...

But all this sounds like a lot of work for a fairly minor feature!  ;)

Sorry! One other thing while I think of it:

Column orders are not remembered. I know that someone has already mentioned their resizing forgetfulness... ;)

Thanks!

About BPM, it's not an exact science, but really more of a toy.  You're right that the half/double problem is the toughest.  But honestly, when I try to tap along, I'm never sure about the half/double stuff either!
