album artist / album type
« on: September 20, 2002, 10:12:38 pm »

I really like how MJ is coming along. I also like the newly improved album identifiers. What I was wondering, how does MJ know if an album is a Mix, Complete, Incomplete?

I can pretty much figure out album artist, if the album tag is the same with different artists, then it's (assorted).

As for Complete/Incomplete album type, how does MJ know? I have only 2 complete albums (mp3s) and the rest are incomplete yet they are technically complete (apls).

I'm gonna first think this is a bug for the file type but I still wanna know how MJ figures it out.

Also, has anything become official on how MJ names the "(assorted)" field? I was able to use (Assorted) and (Soundtracks) for v8.

I'm sure this part of MJ has to become done before the database is finalized.

The album analyzer looks at a bunch of things, including:

Number of tracks in the album
Duration of the tracks in the album
Track numbers
Path's of the files
Some other stuff I can't remember right now

But if they're coming up "incomplete", check your track numbers.  If they don't go 1...N (with N tracks), it'll think it's incomplete.

Let us know what you find out -- could also just be a bug.

Hi Matt,

Found the problem. It's the ape image file used for apls. When I delete the file from the library, everything works.  If I reimport the file, everything still works. Not sure what happened there.

I still want some control over MJ's Auto Album Artist thing. I don't like every Mix album being dumped into (Assorted).

Why not have MJ automatically assign an Album Artist to everything the way it is now, but then just let us edit the Album Artist field for those files we want? Would that really cause that much trouble?

One short note about album complete/incomplete. I've just changed from preview 3 to 5, and i've find this. But i've only imported what i think are completed lp's (i've them in my complete lp's carpet) but about 30 of them appear like incomplete. Well, i can see what's happening with some of them (not fully completed or bonus songs that i've added to the folders or CDS with remixes but not complete), but there's unless 20 of them that for what i can see after look several times i can't find why are setted like incomplete. ? . They've titles, number, covers, correctly file named, in fact the same that the ones calified like complete. Any reason why happen this?

There's a bug making things show up incomplete.  It'll be fixed next preview.

Thanks.
