HI:
I just downloaded the MC9, and it looks really nice. I have been using musicmatch for years, but this looks better.

Other than the IRman and the X10 remotes, will any other remote control work? Specifically, the ATI remote control included with the ATI video cards?

The short answer: no.

Some of us have been wishing for plug-ins for this and the SB extigy/audigy remotes for a while.

Ditto for the Pinnacle PCTV serial remote...

For now I use my Logitech Wireless Keyboard as my "slightly oversized - but very powerful" remote...

You CAN get the ATi remote to work if you use Girder.
There have been threads about this and if you do a search here on the Interact forum you may find that thread and it's info as to what the deal is with Girder.
I had it workng once but find Girder to be too complex for me to get set up and working properly, so I too would love to see a direct plugin for more remotes.

I use my ATI Remote Wonder with Girder.  Using Girder's "X10/ATI Remote control" plugin works great - you won't need to run the ATI remote control program any more and you'll get to program *all* the buttons.  Setup is a breeze and the Girder gml for MC is included in the MC data/extras directory.  I could even give you my gml, which has all the buttons "learned" for the Remore Wonder.

Yeah, it'd be great if MC worked from the get-go with more remotes, but considering that Girder is free, exceptionally powerful, and pretty easy to learn, I don't think you'll be disappointed with having to use it.  And Girder does *much* more than just control MC.  One of my favorites is a simple OSD for volume control.

If you're looking for just the basic functionality, and someone has given you an already learned GML, the only thing you'd need to do is make sure the right plugins are installed.

Even if you had to "learn" all the remote codes, it's still pretty straight-forward.

But, I grant you that the advanced functions are a bit (well, maybe two bits!) more complicated.

You did get it working, right?

I also control MC using the ATI remote wonder and Girder. It works great. I woulnd't call the setup easy. But if you search this forum, I think someone ahs already listed the steps in detail.

I am going to give Girder a shot.
I have read alot about girder and it's complexities on the AVS forum, but maybe if scott can send me that file and make it easier, that would be great.

I have never been able to get some of the remote functions to work: Volume, OSD, Channel (TV), etc . . .
I do get: Stop & Play

When I point Girder to MC's data\extra folder and the included Girder file . . .  then open girder I find there are 2 group folders inside the Media Center9 folder within Girder . . . one named
'mjextman commands' and one named 'wmessage commands'
The mjextman foldeeer is shown with a red symbol on it as if it is disabled . . . .  is this normal?

The two groups are two fundamentally different ways of controlling MC.  One is to use the mjextman command-line program.  The other is to use windows messages.  I think the general concensus is that windows messaging is the preferred method - and it's the one that I use.

Remember that the gml (included in the data/extras/girder folder) isn't necessarily learned for your remote.

Joe:  Tell me where to send it, and I'll give you my gml - it has the Volume OSD and DVDSpy functionality included as well as the MC stuff.  The only caveat with the Volume OSD plugin is that it's a bit of a pain to get the files in the right directory (if I remember correctly).  But the DVDSpy plugin is really easy to setup (especially because it's so well documented).

If you want a Firder 3.2 GML file with lots of readymade MC commands let me know - all you would have to do is "teach" each command a remorecontrol IR button

There are two plugins:  one called "ATI Remote Wonder" and one called "X10/ATI remote plugin".  If you go with the latter (X10/ATI), then you can bypass all the Remote Wonder software (expect the driver, of course) and even use the "ATI" buttons that are normally only allowed to launch the ATI programs.

I guess I need that gml file (which I assume I import instead of the one packaged with MC9.1). If you can email it to me I would be very appreciative.

I'll get the X10/ATi plugin then also.
Do I need anything else to get the volume control and OCD working?
 
I think when I tried it last I had somehow run myself in circles, misconfigured things and got myself a bit confused and frustrated. Otherwise I can't figure why it should be so different from other software and give me such difficulty.

I'd love that file as well.

I tried to install girder many months ago, and all I remember is I scrapped it because it was too much work.

Perhaps with the instructions and this file, I'll garner the motivation again.  Thanks.

My current GML is available at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/scottraymond/ATIRemoteWithMCVolOSDDVDSpy.GML.  Make sure you have all the plugins installed:  I am using DVDSpy, SendMessage, Volume OSD, X10/ATI Remote control interface, and XP OSD.  The hardest to setup was the Volume OSD because you had to edit a few configuration files to get it pointing to the right directory.
