I currently have a single library which contains 10,115 lossless wma files and 16,828 160k mp3 files.  All the physical files resides under a parent directory called "Music Archive".

I want to move all the wma files under a parent directory of "WMA Music Archive" and all the mp3 under "MP3 Music Archive".

Short of doing all this work outside of MC9 and then create two new media libraries in MC9 and then re-import all the wma files into the wma library and all the mp3 files into the mp3 library, is there a way to automatically do this from within MC9?

Here is what I was thinking:

1. Go to the "Audio/File Type" view in MC9, click on 'mp3' to get a list of all the mp3 files.

2. Select all of them.

3. Go to "Rename Files Using File Properties" under Library Tools.

4. Set Base Path to "D:\MP3 Music Archive"

5. Leave Rule at the default "[Artist]\[Album]"

6. Uncheck the "Filename" button since I don't want to rename the files.

7. Repeat the above steps for the wma files.

8. Clear out my media library and then create two new ones and import all the wma into one of them, and all the mp3's into the other.

I was wondering if this is the way to do this, or if I should use some other method.  I'd hate to screw everything up...

Select a few files (to test) and then choose Tools/Library Tools/Move or copy.

Should work fine, but test a few before you do a lot.

Thanks Jim, I'll give that a shot when I get home.  Glad I asked since that seems like a much easier way of doing it than what I was thinking.

Btw, I run MC9 on my computer at work and I configured things so that it connects to my media library at home.  Works great for playing mp3 files, and even pulls the cover art, etc.

Is it possible to somehow copy the actual files from the machine running MC9 at home to my work machine?  The move/copy feature does not seem to work when I'm connected to the remote library at home.  Also, and changes I make while remotely connected to a library don't stick.

It's not possible to move the files with Media Server.  Changes won't stick because the library is opened in read only mode.  Maybe in a future version we'll allow it, but it isn't simple because there can be multiple connections accessing the library.

Turns out I had to use the "Rename Files using File Properties" method since using the "Move / Copy Files" would not preserve the artist\album directory structure, it just dumped all the individual tracks into the parent directory.  Anyway, I'm glad I tested on a single album first!

Makes sense about not being able to update the library remotely since there could be more than one use in it at a time.

As to moving the files across the network within MC9, isn't that more or less what is taking place today when I select a song on the remote computer to play?  Looking at the log on Media Server running on the 'parent' machine, it looks like the individual files and cover are sent to the client machine where they are then played back.  I'd just need an option to save onto the hard drive on the remote client instead of playing the file.

The "save" function doesn't exist, because people could then use media server to "file share".... which would open JRiver up to potential legal issues.
