What's your favorite feature?
« on: November 05, 2003, 11:00:21 pm »

I've not seen it asked before here, but there is something that draws us all to MediaCenter.  Sure, there are other jukeboxes, but there has to be something unique that MediaCenter offers that the rest don't....so why are you here?

My reasons:
I love the multi-sound card support and I love the quick database like jukebox, but what keeps me here is the seemless ripping and encoding into lossless audio compression.

The play button. If they ever took that away, I'd switch to Musicmatch in a heartbeat.

I love it ALL (music features that is).  What made me move in the first place was the ability to start the app and display my library in less than 20 minutes.  Also, not having to wait another 20 minutes when I change the view is kinda useful too.

The power - I like a player/jukebox that gives me maximum control and configurability.

Now that I've started making plugins they are DEFINITELY a big plus - anything missing from MC I'll just add with a plugin myself from now on.

For me it's the flexible organizing capabilities the MC database give me.

The fact that I can organize my pictures in the same app is a huge bonus.

The panes....

It was the panes that made me give this software a second look...

The library with all its possibilities for sorting, filtering and tagging.

Especially quick-tagging is one of my favourite features. It makes it soooo convenient to organize the library.  :)

I first started using MJ8 when my library became too large for others to import without hanging or crashing.  It just kept getting better from there with MC being developed.
I just wish I had found it BEFORE I paid for mmjb with lifetme updates.

I could pay for MC a few times over with all the money I spent (wasted?) on software that I purchased before I found MC that I no longer use.

MMJB 8
Ez Cd Creator 5 full package upgrade
Mood Logic

Just to name the obvious ones......

"All Media.  One player."

or is it

"Media Center.  The one that plays it all."

It's kind of hard to choose just one feature. MC is my primary media app. and it does most things better by far than anything else (I have also spent a couple of hundred bucks on apps I no longer use).

I would have to say my favorite feature is the Interract Forum. I love the way everyone here really is part of an active enthusiastic community that takes MC very serious, but not themselves. Inclusiveness will continue to be the key to MC and J River's success in the future.

In the end it's really all about the music (ok,media!). MC Rules!

I really like the j.river design approach, whereas the Microsoft approach is to hide details in the background and assume what users want to do (ie. big brother type control), and linux based stuff is a coders dream but painful for the novice (ie. my girlfriend), MC seems to strike an ideal balance of easy enough for my girlfriend to use without a training class from me, and flexible enough to do the unique things I want do with it while not hiding things in the background like media player will and others.

I started off using it just because the interface was so much simpler, more consistent and just easier to use than anything else. It's all so customisable and just does what you want that you feel like it's *yours*.

On the other hand, I'm still amazed to find things that I had no idea it could do... like being able to connect to it from a web browser. And the 3D visualisations were a great addition (though I think I have a 3D visualisation addiction now, and need more!)

Sometimes it gets a bit frustrating because you're doing stuff ahead of the general population (I had a hard-disk MP3 player well before the iPod was even in nappies (diapers)) but it's nice that Media Center seems to be up there with me - and in many cases well ahead of me.

My fav is definitely MC's searching capabilities - particularly being able to search all my music collection at once, whether it be on a hard disc, audio or data CD.

Superb support for the iPod (thanks Steve :D) and smartlists. I'd be lost without these. I also use MC as my primary photo management tool and it's cracking for that too.

The past ... :'(

There was a time in days yore that I was really quite a mess. You see, I got hooked on a MJ bug that would clear Playing Now when a file was dbl clicked on in Media Library. I liked that behavior because I could see clearly where I was going...not where I had been. I complained more than once, but Matt stood like a rock. He tried to explain in what context "Add to Playing Now (play next)" meant. I turned a deaf ear. Over time and through counseling, I've learned to accept it.

The present ... :)

The withdrawal pains have subsided...and now I love the fact that it doesn't clear PN. I often look at the history and generate playlists from it. Sometimes you get a list going where the chemistry is just right, and you've got to save it for your children...and your children's children...and their dog! Matt, you stuck to your guns...and despite what JimH says...you're alright in my book.

The future ... :D

I really dig where MC is going. I haven't complemented JRiver in a while (forgive me...I was sick). So...as dad would say to me, I say to you..."Great job there...now go clean up your room"

The DSP.
The sound quality of mp3s (VBR Normal/High) so far can't be touched by other players.
Thst' what got me hooked.  I listen ~8-10 hrs a day with headphones while I code.
