MC uses non-standard "previous" button for playback.
« on: December 10, 2003, 03:07:17 am »

I've noticed that the "previous" button in the MC playback controls does not work in the standard way (i.e. not like normal stand-alone CD and DVD players.)  With stand-alone players, if you're in the middle of a track and you hit the "previous" button, it goes to the beginning of the CURRENT track -- i.e. to the FIRST "break" point going backwards (which is what the little "previous" symbol implies.)

With MC, however, this button goes to the beginning of the PREVIOUS track -- i.e. if you're halfway through track 2, this button will put you all the way back to the beginning of track 1.  This means that the button actually goes back TWO break points, which is not the "industry standard" for the way this button should work.

I have always found this a bit annoying too.  I cannot find a way within MC to replay the currnet track from the beginning without hitting back then forward...  Is there a way to do this and if not could the button be changed to work in this way as like Larry said this is how all actual hifi equipment works and most audio software works...

Cheers

I've brought this up before. No positive responses at the time. I really hope this gets fixed for 10...

I was actually hoping that it would be fixed for 9.1.  Given that 9.1 has officially been out for such a short period of time, I'm hoping that this sort of fix won't be limited to version 10.  I would think that the changes to the code necessary for this type of fix would basically be the same in both versions, so the fix could basically be applied to version 9.1 as well.

J Lee> Not off the top of my head while I am at work ;D

I am pretty sure that WMP works this way.  I think Winamp does too if not then it certainly allows you to replay a track in some way (maybe pressing play I don't remember).  I wil look properly when I get home and give you a full report ;D

It's by design. (not a bug)

Personally I sort of like the way it is.  I'm always guessing in my car when I want to go back a track. I end up hearing the first 3 seconds a bunch of times over.  No ambiguity like that in MC.

We'll see what people say for version 10.

I was first very annoyed by this in v8.  People told me to try it a while.

Now I love it working this way, and want all hifi companies to adopt the MC standard.

Like Matt, I have the same issues in my car with the "old" way.

Its not gonna worry me if it is changed...if its by design fair enough.  Was just wonderng though if there is an actual way to restart a track and if not coud one be added?  Maybe a key combo or a right click or dbl click on an existing button??  Cheers

I don't know if it's possible for click - dbl click operations on the Previous button but if so...

Operation => Result
click => back up to beginning of current track
dbl click => back up to beginning of track prior to current (if there is none, then it behaves as a single click)

I like it the way it is... for software players, the way MC works, seems to be standard (WMP, WinAmp, MMJB, ZoomPlayer and others work like this)...

And there still exists this mysterious "Stop" button ;D

how's about a cute little button right up close to the left end of the position bar, which when pressed repositions the current track to the 0:00 / X:XX position?

Clicking the beginning of the position bar or double clicking the track in PN or highlighting it and pressing enter will all work.  If Adam's after a key combo all that's needed is a shortcut that will jump to the current track in PN.  That could be useful in all sorts of circumstances.  Adam could use it followed by enter and there's your key combo for going back to the beginning of the current track.

At first I thought that the the "Stop" button would work in this way as well, but on further examination it turns out that this only works in certain circumstances.  If you are not in the playing now window (i.e. if you're simply in the track list window) hitting "Stop" then "Play" will restart the HIGHLIGHTED track, not the "currently playing" track.  If NONE of the tracks is highlighted, it will start back at the first song in the list.

I use stand-alone players all the time, and they ALL work by going to the next "break point," which is implied by the arrow/line icon.  This is the industry standard for stand-alone hardware, which I use all the time, so it's basically "annoying" to have to grab and drag in the timeline to restart the track.  To jump back TWO break points to the previous song just isn't intuitive to me.

Regarding having trouble with your car CD player, I don't really understand this -- you just hit the "previous" button to go back as many "break points" as you desire.  To go to the entirely previous song, you just hit it twice.  This is the exact same way you use a search function on a VCR or tape deck -- search back a "single" search point doesn't take you back two.  If you search back "1" point, it takes you to the beginning of the current track.  This is why the industry standard makes more sense -- all devices work the same way so as to eliminate any ambiguity.
