I did not realise that you built 3D visu by hand...

So ,you take some Lego and you paste art-sleeves on it.
Or you have someone making the cubes in wood ?
Who glue the art sleeves?

It's not ready yet.

It's a 3d Library view.  Cubes spin.  You can fly in and out, pan around.

So, how should it work?  

How would you want to move through it?  

How would you select music?  What would that look like?

Well, you'd want to be able to do stuff in a 3D view that you can't do in a 2D view. So...

1) have each face of the cube contain different information: maybe front & back covers, some kind of icon for the genre, a visual indication of the BPM/intensity, etc.

2) sort the cubes in different ways depending on the metadata: eg. have similar albums clustered together based on genre, artist, audio analysis, data etc.

3) have the flythrough guided by playlists: eg. fly from one cube to another as the song is played, and have the cubes laid out by similarity as before

A view a bit like spectrum analyser of 'city blocks' The skyscrapers are artists. Each floor is a song. You fly through the city selecting songs for your playlist. A bit like 'Tron'. Or something. I don't know.

Incidentally there was a TV ad in the UK for Radioheads 'Hail to the Thief' album which rendered the album cover in this way. It always reminded me of MCs 3d visualisation.

I would leave the cover art in 2D and animate them in 3D - maybe like a giant rolodex or a tree-view of billboards.  The first node could be photos of the artists; the second node, the album covers.  You could also do it like a slot machine (which I guess would be the pane-view).

Or... there was a commercial (maybe for an auto company?) that was a take-off of the effects used in Matrix.  I can't remember how they did it in the movie, but...  You're surrounded by a grid of hundreds of vehicles; as you name a criterion (red car), the grid whizzes by and stops, leaving a narrower set of choices.  The objects had a springy-ness when they stopped.

Here's my use model:

1.  Navigate/fly over a field of these cubes, each representing an Album
2.  Cubes are static by default
3.  *Touching* a cube selects it for play, then the cube starts to rotate
4.  Select many cubes = many cubes rotate = Playlist
5.  Once playing, the display will fly randomly over the currently playing rotating cube
6.  Hover over cube gives its details (Album, Artist, etc, )

More complex...

7.  Enter the cube (dbl click) to see the songs contained within
8.  Songs move/float within the confines of the cube (as spheres?)

Mmm...this would be a cool visual...

Have each side of the cube with different information.

We can click on any cube and it makes it fly towards us and zoom in.

We can then rotate the cube to see the different info for the album on different sides of it.

Also - we can have the albums grouped by artist, genre, etc or whatever we want.

You shouldn't have done this - my mind's goin crazy thinking about virtual worlds we can walk through to chose our albums mmmmmmmmmm!

Does anybody from the UK remember way back like 10 or 15 years ago there was a computer project called the Doomsday Project which ran off a laser disc.  It used to have a virtual art gallery where you could "walk" around and select the paintings you wanted to see and see a full screen rendering of it...it was in local libraries.  The one at our library also had a virtual tour of Warwick...always amazes me how technology comes full circle...
