CD-Drive supported by Goldenhawk cannot unselect "2-sec gap"
« on: December 29, 2003, 07:59:09 pm »

So, I read the faq regarding generic drivers, aspi, etc.
Checked the list of "supported" burners, and my burner (Plextor 708A) is supported.
Downloaded the latest ASPI (4.7) for WinXP (my OS)
Ran ASPICHK and it's installed correctly.
Still have "2-sec gap" checked and greyed out, as well as "use generic driver" checked and greyed out.
I think I've done everything correctly and as per the faqs. Can't find anything on the forums that helps...
So... how do I lose the 2-sec gaps?

Oh yeah - I'm using Media Jukebox 8.0.400 (or whatever the latest is)

-Andy.

"So... how do I lose the 2-sec gaps?"

Use Nero or Easy CD Creator. I went through all the same steps as you, Mr. X, and got nowhere with ungreying the 2-second gap option. The option works perfectly with Nero and Easy, so I guess I will be using them for burning in the future. Too bad, because I like MJ better and it worked well for three years, until I installed a new CDRW drive (which is included on the Goldenhawk list).

Thanks for your reply. It's the wife that actually uses MJ8, and I wanted to keep things simple. Using Nero or other outside programs over-complicates things.

Pretty depressing how there seems to be no support whatsoever for MJ8 now that 9 is out and 10 is on the horizon.

For me, I'll stick with WinAmp and Nero.

If it worked well for 3 years and it changed when you installed a new drive, why do you think it's an MJ problem?

I know you weren't asking me, but probably this text from your help file was the reason:

Quote
What do I need?
Hardware
You need a CD burner drive. The currently popular ones (as of June 2002) are 40X speed. At 40X, you can write a 74 minute audio CD in less than 2 minutes. Media Jukebox has two methods of supporting CD burners, a "drive specific" method and a "generic" method. To see which models are supported by the drive specific method, check out the list at http://www.goldenhawk.com/devices_body.html.
Since his (and my) drives are both on the goldenhawk list, we expected them to be supported by the "drive specific" method, allowing for no 2-sec gaps.

Are we wrong for believing that?

J river No Longer Uses GoldenHawk, Media Center Supports Newer Drives.

MJ8 Had Goldenhawk, but i thought they replaced it with there own early CD Writer Software.

As I Said Media Center Is Newer With Better Support.

But we're not recommending that you try it.

JimH: Nero and Roxio allow me to omit the 2-second gap; MJ8 does not. ASPI is up to date.

Why are you not recommending MC? Because if I have the problem with MJ8, I'll have it with MC? I thought of trying MC and would pay if I could omit the two second gap. Thanks!

The burner driver has been updated in MC9 many times in the last 1 1\2 and MJ8 has not.

So it may work in MC9 Since that is more up to date than MJ8

You were correct, KingSparta: Media Center allows me to omit the two second gap, so I am going to buy it. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry, I had responded to the string that had come up in the search, and hadn't read the full chain of relies to this topic, which implies that new MJ8 driver support will not come along, and that we are sol.

So even after years of loyal licensed MJ use, we have to shell out $40 to get a few upgrades we don't really want at thes time, just to use our new CD burners? I guess J Rivers wants to alienate all their past customers. How 'bout an upgrade fee, from MJ8 to MC9... the delta of $15. Otherwise, I will be forced to go elsewhere... and I would guess that as the 100,000s of current MJ8 users get newer burners many will do the same. Not that $40 is so bad, but that we will have already paid $25, and that many of us will feel that someone is trying to take advantage of us.  (I am writing this in hopes that JRiver will consider an upgrade fee approach).

I think all companys move on to new products at some point even if a few users take your stance and don't upgrade.

I have often wondered however why they continued to sell MJ8 since it was released a few years ago.

it wold be nice if they released a updated MJ10 and allow MJ8 users to upgrade to it.

then again i do not own stock in J River nor am I a Member of the Board (if there was one).

That's nice, you quoted me regarding an upgrade fee with a pointer to the page listing the full cost ($39.95) for MC9.

I meant like All other major SW customers.... Microsoft, Adobe, Symmantic... Previous rev users do not have to pay the full list price everyone else has to pay for the new version, particularly if they are discontinuing an old but very closely related product (eg, silver to gold models, as MJ to MC really is), but some reduction of that.

So, how 'bout $15, or so? Good marketing strategy, keep the old cutomers coming back. Charge $40 for the new ones that weren't helping J Rivers get going at the start.

It is not there. I get redirected to
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/buy_faq.html
which shows the prices for all, but no upgrade pricing.

This redirection occurs wether I click on the link you provided in this forum, or if I cut and paste.  Sounds good, but I can't get to the page.

Hmmm, hunting around, I have found
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/buy_faq.html
shows this pricing and how the process works. To help the lame out (like myself), It would be great for the 19.95 to be listed on the overall price list.

Thanks for prodding me along.

Yea, but would they seek if they didn't want to chase?

well i just think it is confusing to most, even more so if they don't read thru all of the FAQ

not sure why the restore page could not just ask the user for there info (old key) and users name and allow the system to figure out the price for the upgrade and all that.

how many users have just walked away with out asking the question? many i am sure.
