Can you sync via Media Server?
« on: January 10, 2004, 02:27:55 am »

I use Media Server to access my audio library on another system over the LAN.  Can MC's synchronize function be used to sync an mp3 device if the files are not located locally (i.e. if they are all accessed over the LAN via Media Server)?  I thought I read something about this a while back, cut I can't seem to find the information when I search the forum for it.

Thanks,

Larry

A related question: if you are using a remote library, can you use the Move/Copy command to copy files to the local machine? I suppose I should just go and try it really.

[EDIT] No, it doesn't allow it. The dialog for Move/Copy opens up but when you click on copy it doesn't do anything.

However, you can mount the remote volume where you keep music and create a local library by importing from that. Then you can sync & move/copy. Worked for me.

I can't check the sync capability since I don't currently have an available firewire port on the second system.  If I can sync via MC's Media Server, I'll put a firewire card into the second system.  If I can't sync this way, however, I won't bother (I'll just have to use the first system for synching both of our iPods.)

Thanks again for any information on this,

I know that this has been asked before, but I can't find the previous post even though I've tried various word combinations in my searches.  If you access a library from a remote computer via Media Server, can you sync these files to an MP3 player on this machine, or do the song files have to be on a local hard drive?

Thanks again for any information on this,

I was asking about this a month or so ago, as I'd just purchased a Creative Nomad 3.

This is not possible, according to JRiver, as it becomes a more murky area legal-wise.

Imagine, if you will, that someone connects to your Media Server across the internet. If they can download your media files to a local device at their end, it becomes a bit like P2P, and JRiver don't want that (understandably so, I think).

Hope this helps...

While I of course understand the idea of not wanting illegal sharing, I don't understand how Media Server makes sharing any easier.  It would be just as easy to simply share and stream the files through a standard file server.  All media server does is integrate with MC easier, but this has nothing to do with making it any easier to illegally share mp3's.

This seems like an example of effectively punishing the people who obey the law without making it any more difficult to break it.
