Spam stands for "Self-Promotional Advertising Message".

It has nothing to do with the food SPAM, which stands for "Shoulder of Pork and Ham" (yes, I know the abbreviation is a bit silly but that is apparently what it's called).

The food should always be written as SPAM, in capitals, to differentiate it from junk email.  ;)

I thought it was short for "Spiced Ham"?

Spamology article from the New York Times. I like the Monty Python reference to Vikings drowing out a conversation with shouts of "Spam, spam, spam!"

Zev, I'm guessing this is not a popular product where you live?

Well ,outside US and UK ,this food is even not know.

But i found it in an old restaurant in London and got a lecture about SPAM and how it was the main food in England during WW2 when they got full ships of it from US

So , i can say that i'am one of the very few not anglo to have tasted it.

Deep fry ,it was good..

Thank for let me know that you can get a spam about SPAM...

Recipe: Cajun Coconut Spam Fritters. Not sure I fancy the Spam cupcakes on the same page though...

Lots more information available here from the Spam Museum.

As for email spam: Spam and the Internet.

My understanding was that some clever nerds with exceedingly good taste named it from an episode of Monty Python where vikings recite the word spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam spam- over and over and over and over and over and over and over....see the similarity?
