Tagging WMA vs. MP3 for Album Thumbnail View?
« on: January 24, 2004, 08:04:55 am »

I am trying to finish adding the last few images to my album thumbnails and I have run into a problem. Well, I think it's a problem.

99.9% of my audio files are VBR MP3. I do have (10) WMA files (With my DSL connection, I got 10 free downloads). These WMA files are protected, therefore I can not convert to MP3. I am trying to get these files to group with my multiple artist thumbnail and it will not let me change the tagging information to allow me to do this. I have set the album to "singles" and the "track #" to 9999. But it will not change the "Album Artist (Auto)" to "(Multiple Artists)". If I delete the "(Multiple Artists)" , the "Artist" entry is deleted.

I am also trying to figure out how "Album Type" is set. I have yet to search through the forum. If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

You can't change the 'Album Artist (auto)'... however you can change the 'Album Artist' field to '(Multiple Artists)' and the 'Album Artist (auto)' field is calculated off that.

(Unless it's empty, in which case the 'Album Artist (auto)' field has either the same as the 'Artist' field or '(Multiple Artists)' if the album has various artists - according to MC's criteria... I guess the album has to be the same file type e.g. all mp3's.)

Thanks Zarius, adding "(Multiple Artists)" to "Album Artist" caused the WMAs to group as I wanted.

I guess I still don't understand why the mp3s, with "Album Artist" left blank, group just fine, while the WMAs won't group unless I manually add "(Multiple Artists)".

That's because MC only set's the 'Album Artist (auto)' field to '(Multiple Artists)' if it detects that the file is part of an album that has multiple artists... and the way MC determines if files are part of the same album is if they are in the same directory on the hdd and (I'm guessing, based off what you said) of the same file type (ie. all mp3's or all wma's).

I am having a problem with the directory structure.  I have the option set in the converter to move my files to a new directory and use Artist/album name to create a directory structure.  I am Ripping all of my CDs to ape format on a 200gb hard drive and then converting them to ogg on my 160gb hard drive.

The software is not recognizing my album/artist tags that I created using Abander TagControl v2.  I don't know if this is affecting Media Jukeboxes ability to create the structure.

Can anyone tell me where the artist/album information is sourced when it creates the directory structure and why it doesn't see my ape tags?

Thanks

If Media Center isn't reading APE tags off of your APE files, they're probably corrupt tags.  Media Center uses the reference APE code.

Start another thread if you'd like to dig some more.
