OGG and ID3 tags
« on: February 11, 2004, 10:34:45 pm »

I ripped a ton of my CDs into OGG format using MJ 8.  I own an iRiver iHP-120 portable jukebox, and I was hoping to be able to browse my music using the ID3 tag information.

Am I mistaken, or does it turn out that when ripping into OGG format, MJ 8 doesn't create ID3 tags (v1 or v2.3)?  It appears to me that MJ 8 creates some sort of tag when encoding into OGG format, but not an ID3 tag, and not one that my iHP-120 will read.

Is there a way for me to add ID3 tags to my OGG files, using either MJ 8 or some other program?  (And which do you recommend if another program?)

I'd hate to have to re-encode my music to be able to search by ID3 tag info...

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!

I think MC9 And MC10 handle OGG files better.

Ogg (& flac) files use Vorbis Comments which are far superior to ID3 tags (which are incompatible with oggs anyway). If you mean browse the iRiver from MJ then what the King said rings true. If you mean browse within the iRiver then you lost me...'cause if the player supports ogg then it will support VC's.

I mean to browse within the iRiver player.  The player supports (i.e.--plays) OGG files.  It also reads OGG tags when playing such files.  But, when using the iRiver player, if you want to _search_ your files by anything other than path name (ex: by genre) then you need to do so using ID3 tag info.

Are ID3 tags really incompatible with OGG files?  In reference to ID3 v1 tags, I read the following in the MJ Help booklet [under How To..., ID3 Tags]:  "Can be included in many formats (MP3, WMA, OGG VORBIS, APE)."

So what I'm hoping to do is add (apparently inferior) ID3 v1 tags to my OGG files.  Can I do this w/ MJ 8?  With MC 9 or 10?  With some other program?

Thanks for your replies!!!  I'd appreciate further help!

OK...I see what you mean. I don't know of any tagger that will write ID3 tags to vorbis (or flac) and including said may make the file unreadable on players expecting just VC's.

The limitation is in the iRiver software and can be overcome by using one of several db tools that will scan OGG files and add them to the internal DB.

Have a look at iRipDB. It also has the format of the internal DB documented.
