When a mix album is broken across multiple artist directories, MC will still knows it's a mix.

The only time it won't know the files are from a mix are if you have files from multiple albums in the same directory.

That is by design because people that keep everything in one folder would get erroneous "(Multiple Artists)" entries otherwise when two artists shared an album by the same name.

So, if you are seeing results that aren't what you expect, use MC's "My Computer" view to see where files are and move albums into their own directories.

Also, you can always override "Album Artist (auto)" by filling in the "Album Artist" field.

this is precisely what is NOT working. I have been doing this for over 1600 albums and it was working perfectly. Now (starting somewhere around 10.0.70) it is not working. MC will not do this.

I have confirmed this on several albums. of mine.

I personally think it is not a good idea to restrict that each album has it's own separate directory. This is too stringent and narrow-minded requirement. Remember that people have multiple ways of getting their files into the database (other than CD-ripping by MC). I have 320GB of space using 3 disks and about 300GB is media library and 4-5GB free. Reorganizing it so I can take "advantage" of this new behavior is simply out of question. Everything used to work just fine till 10.0.70.

Why couldn't the criteria for detecting that an album is a multiple artist simply be that it has more than 1 artists listed and the Album Artist field is empty? I mean the organization of the album has nothing to do with whether the album has multiple artists or not. Whether the album has multiple artists or not is a non-tech concept and please don't try to make it more complicated - otherwise most new users will never understand it/use it.

Could you list step by step what you do, what you see and what the outcome is.

I select the Album, A Day in the Life of Africa.

I select all the songs in the album.

I right click and choose Library Tools, Rename Files from Properties.

  Base Path = D:\Music\
  Rule=[Artists]\[Album]

  x Use "Assorted" for [Artist] on multi-artist albums

  Rule=[Track#] - [Name]

I press OK.

MC says it is renaming files, counts from 1 to 14. No file names change.

This works exactly like this on every multi-artist album I have that is currently spread out in various Artist directories.

We think it's better to be under aggressive instead of over aggressive when deciding an album is a mix.  The old over aggressive style caused confusion many times here on Interact.

You'll have to organize files into folders or else manually edit the "Album Artist" field.  This should only take a few minutes using MC's library tools.

So I have to do this manually. Not happy, but well, the way things are going I may have to shop around for another program anyway. Pretty much all the functionality I use on a regular basis is getting taken away.

But now I wonder, what does the "Use Assorted for Artist" do now? Or are you planning to just remove it since it doesn't actually do anything?

Said another way: you can have a mix album spread across multiple directories, but can not have files from other albums in the same directories.
