Please Support Microsoft Intellimouse/Intellitype
« on: March 06, 2004, 08:10:44 am »

I have a brand new Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite set up. The mouse/keyboard features the new tilt-wheel. The keboard also has multimedia transport keys. None of which work with Media Center. This may seem minor but is major, in my opinion, for new business. My feeling is that many new users will look for this integration into their current system when looking at new media player software. I'm actually suprised it doesn't work. Please consider supporting these features as they really improve the usability of MediaCenter. I really like the ability to have Media Center minimized and being able to control it via the keyboard.

Thanks in advance!

Im not familiar with this setup, so the following may be totally wrong, but since noone else has replied Ill give it a go.

Tilt wheel - sounds cool, would like to try this. I suspect this requires a change in MC as you suggest.

Transport keys: I dont know how you configure these, but if you can choose a program to run when they are pressed, MC has a number of command line parameters which include the usual transport funtions. Can you set up your keyboard to use those? I dont know if an MC install could automatically configure transport keys for all the various keyboards out there.

Hope this helps.

[EDIT: OK, Ive just seen this thread. So perhaps its not that simple. But you never know]

It's quite easy to do this.  I've explained it before in this thread.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I know it's pretty easy to do but then it breaks the functionality for any other media player application as well. This should not be required for the casual user that just wants to use his/her fancy keyboard with Media Center.

Multimedia keys should work if you don't install Intellitype.  (Itellitype does weird catching / routing stuff)

As for the tilt wheel, there's no standard windows message to let us know the user is using the tilt wheel.  From what we could tell, it looked like the Intellipoint driver did weird scroll emulation that only worked in some programs.  Hopefully Microsoft will tidy up and document the implementation in the future.

Logitech will get it right when they come out with their version of the tilt wheel.  Until then, I'm waiting ::)
