Media Players
« on: April 04, 2004, 02:35:35 pm »

Do You have more than one media player ? Do You  use it for  Music or Video? Or do You use MC for everything? I tried winamp 5.03 the other day just to see what it  was about and to My ears it's sounded bad when I compared it to MC. Was it Me or is Media Center that much better ?

i use mc for EVERYTHING (music, radio, video's, dvd's, images), except in the following situations:

1) when mc is busy tagging, updating or ripping. then i use WM9
2) sometimes MC doesnt work too well with DVD's and .vob files. With the DVD's i noticed the sound changing in volume suddenly, also if i resize the screen sometimes this resets the dvd to the beginning. with .vob files moving my mouse into the screen area sometimes turns the screen black (file still playing, sound okay, just video gone)

if 1 went away (bigger processor or a limit to cpu load for mc jobs) and 2 were fixed id never need anything else...

I use to use Creative Media Source for transfering to my handheld as it was a lot better then 9 but I now dumped that since V10, MC is FAR superior to it... The only other player I use is MMJB and that is just for the Artist Match Radio... If MC ever got anything like it, MMJB would also be deleted!

It's like a all request radio station...

You can pick an artist and depending on the agreement with the artist may have a few tracks or all of them. They are CD quality. It's NOT a download service. I use it to listen to new bands (new to me) and if I like them I buy the cd.

My ISP has agreement with MMJB and I get free Radio MMX Gold, wich I upgraded to Platinum. It's pretty cool. I dont think I'd pay full price though.

I use Itunes to SYnc with the ipod (MC still isnt 100% stable with this yet)

unfortunately, I am using Itunes to play now too, because I like my playcounts on the ipod to be accurate (so I can have an accurate 100 most played, etc).

I wish and hope MC will put the finishing touches on ipod support.  Just when it seems stable for many builds, a new one comes out and sets everything back (and forces me to resync 30 gb of data)

I find that MC is by far the best thing to use for organizing, ripping, and burning (especially since I use Monkey's Audio almost exclusively), but MC is lacking for use with streams.  Like some other people (OK, maybe only a few other people), I bemoan the fact that MC can't save pointers to remote PLS files, as Winamp can (in the form of "Bookmarks").

I also have more problems with streams skipping when I use MC, because there is no independent setting for the streaming buffer.

I find MC just plain clunky for streams for still other reasons...  For example, when a stream has multiple servers listed, Winamp will gracefully cycle through them repeatedly, until one of them responds.  It also gives meaningful status information.  MC, on the other hand, tries one server, freezes for awhile (i.e. you can't immediately stop it, or try another server manually), then tries the next couple, and finally throws and error and gives up--before trying all the servers even one time.
