Size of 6x9 speaker box
« on: April 23, 2004, 06:41:47 am »

Building my own to clear the anchor and other stored items. I can make them most any size other than the depth. Looking on the web I see that the volume varies anywhere from 520 cubic inches to 864 cubic inches. The speaker will have about 50 watts continuous power, non vented. What is the rule of thumb and why would I go to a larger or smaller cubic inch?

It really depends on the speaker driver itself rather than just the size (6x9). If it's a name brand, maybe there are spec sheets available (on the web, or via snail mail) that indicate the correct enclosure size. If nothing like that is available, maybe just split the difference of the 520 and 864 cubic inch numbers.
As a rule of thumb for non-vented enclosures, I believe the larger the better for accuracy of sound. Smaller enclosures probably give you a more "punchy" bass sound but it's not accurate reproduction.
