I am about to rip a bunch of cds. I want to use APE as it is lossless, but I wanted to make certain I won't loose sound by using the best compression ratio. I have read monkey audio's site and searched these forums, but don't see specific reference to if lossless, (as good as that can be on computers, laser data transfer, general electonic loss ) is changed at all by the compression ratios on APE. I would think I could use the best compression ratio and not experience much difference than by using the worst compression ratio.

Can anyone help?

Just use the normal settings for APE.  Don't change anything.  "High" compression only saves 2 or 3% of the space and it takes more CPU for both compression and playback.

The audio quality would not be affected by the compression ratio. As it is lossless, it will sound the same with all different type of compression.

The only difference between compression is the slightly smaller filesize (at highest) and the need for a higher CPU processing to decode it on playback.

The sound quality is not going to be affected as it is lossless no matter what compression ratio you get.

But truly, the size of the ape file is not going to be that much smaller at Extra High to make it worth the extra encoding and decoding time.
