Hardware media keys don't work
« on: June 25, 2004, 03:12:46 am »

None of the media keys on my "Natural Keyboard Pro" work with Media Center 10. They work without problems in other programs like Media Player, Zoom Player etc. OS is XP-SP1, driver version IntelliType 5.00.174.0.

Is there a setting to enable them or is this a bug?

It's the same here. They seem to work with most other apps, but not this one.

XP pro, sp1a, media center 10

Don't you have to map the keys to a specific app? That was the case with an HP keyboard on a new system I set up recently. Look in Control Panel for something keyboard related.

Here these are working OK with Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.0A:

IntelliType Pro Key Assignments
Key Name      Description

My Music      Custom: Starts Media Core (this is mapped to MC in Control Panel/Keybord/Key Settings)
Media      Starts media player (somehow MC10 seems to be my default media player)
Stop (media)   Stops media track
Play / Pause   Plays and pauses media track
Next Track   Skips to next media track
Prev. Track   Skips to previous media track
Volume +/-   Changes the on-screen display for the Volume and Mute Hot Keys

Driver version 5.1.2600.1106

I don't find any special settings in MC10. Perhaps "Enable Shell Integration" does something. I have it enabled.

Where did you get version 5.1 from? The Microsoft website only lists 5.0.

This is a guess, so don't shoot me if it's wrong, but v5.1.2600 could be the version of the OS, not the driver - XP was build 2600 of the original Windows NT source code tree, and was internally known as v5.1 before is was branded.

It's the driver version what is reported in Control Panel/Keybord/Hardware/Properties/Driver.

Software version reported in Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs is Microsoft IntelliType Pro 2.2.

I'm using a MS Natural Wireless Multimedia keyboard which I just bought. It came with the latest intellitype, which is driver version 5.0.174.0

In the past, I had a natural non-wireless with an earlier intellitype. This worked in MC9. I will now install the older intellitype and see if it works.

-EDIT-

OK, Intellitype 2.2 (which is the only old version I have), does not really work with my keyboard. Itellitype 5.0 does not work with MC, and ONLY MC. It works fine with the other player apps I have tried.

Yes, that is my problem too. Media Jukebox 8 had also problems with the media keys but at least it mostly worked. I had hoped that the remaining problems had been fixed in Media Center but obviously it's even worse now.

Any comment from JRiver on this problem?

Same problem here:

MC10.0.149 + MS Natural Keyboard Pro - with latest Intellitype (v5.??), the media keyboard keys do not work.  I reinstalled Intellitype 2.2 and they work OK.

Maybe you could report this to Microsoft.  It could make a difference.

The next build of MC 11 will hook the multimedia keys a different way.

Please let us know if it makes any difference for you.

Thanks!

But it's only MC which has this problem. Other programs like e.g. Media Player, ZoomPlayer, QCD, Media Player Classic and even Apple's QuickTime Player work without problems with the media keys on my System.

That may suggest that Microsoft has tested other programs.

What do you mean, that Microsoft should test every kind of software out there before they release new drivers that could have a problem with them? We both know that this won't happen  :)

Besides, even Media Jukebox 8 already had problems with the media keys and behaved erratically (but at least it worked). I had reported that (unsuccessfully) some time ago.

I hope that the new kind of hook that Matt mentioned will solve the problem (and that there will be a free upgrade to MC11 then - I just recently purchased the license for MC10).

Jim is right that each manufacturer (and even version) has their own idea about how to forward these commands to a program.

Hopefully the new method will side-step some of that silliness.  Please let us know.
