Evaluator Problems
« on: July 19, 2004, 07:40:13 pm »

I am currently evaluating the Media Center and had a couple of issues. The first is although I downloaded the zip several days ago, I did not unzip or install my 30 day eval until today. The application however informs me I only have 11 days left to evaluate product. How come? The second issue is why use your own YADB database, why not use CDDB, Amazon, or allow imports from existing collections etc? My whole 1,000 Music Cd is already cataloged for instance with Music Collector.
So far I have yet to have your database find a single CD in my collection, and I certainly don't want to enter and update your database for you.

1. Check your computer system clock
2. JRiver uses YADB because of licensing issues with CDDB. YADB is based on Freedb. As far as your issues with not getting any hits, there is probably some technical answer to that that I don't have, but someone else will be happy to address.

MC is the best product of it's kind around, with the best support around. The MC admin folks(mostly 8-5ers) and hundreds of others from around the world with a lot more expertise than me (but we all try to contribute what we can) check in and advise on this board several times a day.

Enjoy the music and exploring MC.

Did you download the official MC 10 release, or the alpha MC 11 release?  MC 11 purposely uses a very short trial period.  It's only a test build, and the developers don't want us to keep on our system for very long. ;)

If you downloaded MC 10, then, yeah, modelmaker said:  check your system clock and make sure the date is correct.

No, Clock and Calendar are fine. And I was using Version 10. Oh well, I just went ahead and uninstalled the application. Maybe I will try it again when the product matures a little more. Thanks anyway!

All versions except 11 are MATURE ! To make such a judgement based on a few hours and not even bothering to wait until morning when someone from JRiver could help you out shows  just who is mature.

Sorry about the rant.

Well I will certainly be willing to try and install it again, even download it again and reinstall. I will go from there and report back what I find. After all I think I'm mature enough!

Well Today I REDOWNLOADED THE Media Center Application and my Calendar reports that today is Wednesday, July 21st 2004 and the time is 5:52pm and Now Media Center is reporting only "9" days left in my evaluation period although I only first installed it 2 or 3 days ago. So I don't know what the problem is, if there was some registry setting or some inf file or something that was saved when I first "downloaded" the eval and not when I actually installed it for the first time. But I guess I will just have to evaluate it for the 9 days I have left and let it go at that.

Well, putting aside, for the moment, your original issue about only having 11 days, you should know that once you install it the first time, that's it.  The clock starts ticking. :)

Think about it.  It makes sense, otherwise, all someone would have to do is reinstall it every 29 days (a 30 second task) to continue using it for free indefinitely.

Yeah, I guess so but personally that would seem like an awful lot of work to me, installing, cataloging all of your media and turning around and deinstalling just to turn around and reinstall again.
I could also understand if this product was ultra expensive that someone would do that, but not at this price. If there are people that would do it at that price, you know what, if I was JRiver I would give it to them, if they really are that bad off that they couldn't afford it and you know what I bet you that those same people would pay when they could. But that is Another whole subject altogether, but I do understand your point.
I just don't understand why the clock started ticking when I downloaded the app versus when I actually installed it. But I will just deal with my 9 days that I have left, compare it to a couple of other apps that I am looking at and if it does what I wan't then I will just purchase it.

What "other" apps ( read contenders) would those be ?

With MC, you get a full featured product to try out.  Nothing is disabled, and backing up and restoring your library is literally a two click operation.

So backing up, uninstalling, reinstalling, and then restoring literally wouldn't take more than 60 seconds. ;)

I just don't understand why the clock started ticking when I downloaded the app versus when I actually installed it.

Okay, in your first post (dated July 19), you stated that you just installed MC, and that it was telling you that you only had 11 days left.  Now, two days later, you posted that it was saying that you only had 9 days left.

11 - 2 = 9  :P

Evidently someone missed the whole point. My understanding was when I downloaded this application it was for a 30 day eval. I performed this download 2 or 3 weeks ago. I didn't actually install the application to use it however until 2 days ago. At that point the app told me I only had 11 days left in the eval period.
So I emailed the list about what I percieved to be a problem (only having 11 days left after install) and everyone told me to check my time and date, like I was an idiot. So I did so. Then I was told that I was being imature that I did not wait until someone a JRiver was available to talk to. So I did and I re-downloaded the product just to see if I had a bad copy or something. But it was still counting down. So I wasn't complaining about 11 versus 9 days. It is counting down correctly.
My complaint was I didn't get 30 days, only 11 from install date.  IN ANY CASE - Since this has done nothing but start a bunch of garbage, not to mentione a waste of a few peoples time, as I stated I am going to finish the 9 days I have left and compare it with some other applications that I am looking at and will purchase the product if it does what I want.

Nobody needs to respond as that is already obvious that JRiver will not do anything about it as they think I am trying to steal thier 30 dollar package. It's not a big deal, either I buy it or I don't.

Thanks!

I'm only responding just to clarify a possible misunderstanding.

No one thinks you are an idiot.  The "check your date" response is just a standard response because 100% of the time (so far) that has always been the problem.

My guess is that you actually installed it for the first time "2 to 3 weeks" ago when you first downloaded it, especially since that fits perfectly with the amount of time you have left.  (19 days falls in that 14-21 day range.)  It doesn't make you an idiot to download something, install it, and then put it aside for a while you are busy with other things.  (When you installed it again, there wouldn't be any message stating, "Hey! This is already installed!" :P)  And no, we don't think, or speaking for myself, I don't think you are trying to cheat anyone. :)

It's all good.  Just continue playing with it for the next week like you said you would.  You'll love it.  It's a fantastic product.
