Album Artist on WMA files
« on: August 17, 2004, 10:43:26 pm »

I have my entire library in WMA lossless files.  I use Media Center as my primary player/library manager but I also use Windows Media Center Edition on one of my computers.  Windows Media Center Edition (MCE) uses the Windows Media Player database to get information about music files.  The "Album Artist" field is key to the organization in the Windows Media Player database.  I set this field (NOT the auto version) using Media Center but Windows Media Player does not see it.  I tried setting the Band and Orchestra fields as well and have the same problem.  Tag&Rename does not see these values either.

I tried selecting the "Update Tags from Library" menu item to see if that helped but it did not.  If I use Tag&Rename to set the "Orchestra/Band" field, WMP sees it as the "Album Artist" field successfully.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

- Narendra

I'm having a similar problem with my WMA lossless files.  I would like to use some of the additional WMA tags for organizing my Soundtracks (like using the "Band" tag to hold the actual artist).

Like nvarma, changing the value in MC does not actually change the file, as far as Windows Media Player is concerned.

I have my entire library in WMA lossless files.

How does that work out for you? When you transcode to MP3 or something how are the results?

I use APE, but I have been curious about WM9 Lossless.

Not curious enough to rip to it though. Call me lazy!

I ripped mine that way because I've had better luck with support in Windows-based apps.  They used to be ripped as FLAC.

Transcoding to mp3 sounds just as good as if I'd ripped from CD.  That's kinda the point ;D.

An update using WMP 10:

The Media Center "Composer" field is successfully seen by WMP 10.

However, the following Media Center fields DO NOT correspond to the equivalent WMP10 fields:

Album Artist
Conductor
Band
Orchestra

I would imagine since WMA is a Microsoft format, that WMP10 is the definitive player for that format.  Hence it seems that Media Center has a bug when editing tags on WMA files.

Thanks,

Could this be why I can't get the albumn art updated easily in 11092?
