A question about yadb, cdplayer.ini and Mc's library
« on: September 06, 2004, 12:10:25 pm »

When I insert a cd not on Yadb or in my cdplayer.ini file, and I'm not connected to the internet, MC keeps in its library an unknown album association.  If I insert it again, there's the possibility to update from Yadb, but not from the cdplayer.ini file.  When I can't find albums on Yadb (especially more recent South American, Asian or African music), I often check them out on Freedb with another program, but then MC won't update from the cdplayer.ini, unless I manually delete the unknown entry cd from MS's library. Is there a reason for the library to keep unknown cd associations in its database?  If yes, could MC try to update those albums through cdplayer.ini as well?

You make a good point.

I don't think MC looks at cdplayer.ini after it has initially allocated unknown CD to the CD.

Would be good to have a right click option to "update from cdplayer.ini"

That option is now in MC as of 11.0.195:

13. NEW: Added context menu option to update CD info from the cdplayer.ini file rather than YADB.

Too bad that mc doesn't support freedb. YADB only recognizes a small portion of the CDs that freedb recognizes. most audio grabbing tools support freedb, mabey there could be a way to freedb as an alternative ?

YADB was built from FreeDB...

YADB was built from FreeDB...
From FreeDB data -- not source.  We wrote the software that drives it from scratch.

No.  Not possible.  Not planned.  Never will happen.  No.

this is by far the greatest shortcoming of MC, imo. i never use MC's ripping feature due to this, in stead i prefer EAC.
freedb support would be a wonderful addition.

There are others who would differ on this, I think.  In any event, it isn't going to change.  It works very well.  We had a lot of trouble with other solutions.

I'm not a big fan of freedb, gracenote or yadb. All of them rely on submissions from users which are not always accurate or formatted correctly/consistently. The AMG (allmusic.com) data is an improvement.

So with Media Center, the process of ripping a CD has always been a multistep process for me. I always have to run AMG from a browser so I can double check the yadb entries for accuracy. I also need to get data for a couple of other useful fields, like 'year', 'year recorded' (a custom field that is useful for many compilation or 'best of' albums) and 'AMG rating'.

Where exactly is this option?  I'm running 11.0.97, but I can't find it  :-[  After loading a CD I can see options to use YADB or the CD db, but not cdplayer.ini.

Right click on the CD drive in the tree and select "Update from CDPlayer.ini".

EDIT: It looks like the menu option got removed from the build. It will be back in the next build.
