Ipod issues with MC11 v 109
« on: October 26, 2004, 11:19:25 am »

Steve,

Although things were going pretty well v 109 is giving me some strange issues.

Most importantly, after a synch I get a message "the desired handheld is invalid" , I click on OK, the message comes back, I click OK again and then "Media Centre has encountered a problem and must close" appears.

Secondly, I have "Synch info to MC" checked in the options and it appears to do this as soon as I click on "synchronise" in the AW, before I get to the next AW screen. Then if I click on "options" or "transfer" on that screen, it sends info to MC again. Something strange is happening as I have a playlist that contains tracks that have a "0" in the "number plays" field and after this synch, all the tracks in that playlist have a number "3" in that field even though I've only heard them once on the Ipod. Looks like the same info is being sent a number of times, not just a single time.

On the plus side, speeds remain in 4.50 range and all the right tracks got transferred to the Ipod, albeit with several showing a bitrate of 1411 not 128 for MP3 files - an issue I've reported in the main thread for the version.

Good luck as always. John.

I had no problems with my Ipod using MC 10.173.  But ever since I tried MC 11.108 thru build 111 I get "The Device is Invalid" error just like you.  I have even restored my Ipod using the Ipod software and re-initialized in MC, but it still occurs.

I have been getting the same error for the past few builds too. I am trying not to reset the ipod because I have been using it for the past few weeks and would lik e to synch the ratings and number of plays back to MC11.

The next build of MC  (tonight?)has many modifications as to how MC interacts with Portable Drive type players of which iPod is one. Please get it and hopefully it will make these issues go away.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Good news - no error messages with build 112.

Bad news - still getting multiple "number played" entries after synching. The Ipod appears to add 1 to that field on clicking "synch" and then on clicking "transfer". If I repeat the process no more numbers are added - so that after each time I connect the Ipod to MC11 all the tracks that had never been played before had "2" in the "Number Played" field instead of the "1" it should have been.

The good news is that last time the number added was "3" so it's a step in the right direction.

I uninstalled 113 and reinstalled 109.  No crashes, but the "handheld is not valid" message is back.  I uninstalled 109 and reinstalled 113.  After I start the sync, the process of deleting files not in the sync starts, and immediately after that process ends the program suddenly crashes.  No message, no warning.  Just closes.

I'm getting the same results as francelonian -- I open MC (now I'm using 113, but I had the same problem with 112. Had not tried to sync the iPod in v. 11 before), it sees the iPod (tho' it doesn't recognize it as an iPod, just drive G:), I choose sync (why did that go away from the right click menu??). It updates info from the iPod to MC, deletes files not in the selection, then it attempts to start adding new files and I get either the "Media Core" error message or nothing, MC just closes, Bam.

Went back to v. 10 which I kept on my system, and it worked. But I've gotten really used to v. 11, so I want this to work.

BTW, bought meself an iPod Photo today (yee, freakin' ha!!). So when you want to start testing functionality to sync photos, I'm your girl <g>.

Okay, now I had the same result (MC 11.113 closed with a Media Core error) when trying to transfer files to a Creative Nomad Muvo.

First, I tried to sync, but even though the playlist only has 120mb of songs, when I clicked on that one playlist, it said I had -240mb of space (it's an empty 128mb Muvo). When I stopped trying to sync and switched to just transferring, it started to work, acted like it was going to upload, but after several seconds, I got the Media Core error.

Francelonian and tlongacre,

I cannot duplicate this and I think it may be that our versions are slightly out of sync. If you have an iPod, it should show up in the tree as IPOD (driveletter:). If not try again with the next MC build 11.0.114 and let me know if the problem still continues.

Francelonian,

Can you confirm what tlongacre says about iPod not showing in the tree as IPOD(G:) <- for example?

My Ipod shows up as "IPOD (E:)"

I am using the latest iPod software (just reinstalled everything yesterday) and have gone back to build 109, for now.

I really do appreciate the efforts.

francelonian,

If you don't mind starting cleanly, can you right click on your iPod and select 'Intitialize iPod'?  This will remove everything, but hopefully you can go forward then.

Steve,

with 113 and a brand new iPod, it did say "IPOD (G:)". However, I still had the same results -- namely, I tried to sync, it started, but when it got to transferring files to the iPod it got stuck for awhile (30 sec, a minute) and then MC just closed.

I have now tried this with a 3rd and 4th generation iPod, a Creative Nomad Muvo and a TeleAdapt MiniMP3 player and they all get this result.

BTW, when I went back to MC 10 with the new iPod, it asked me to Initialize again. (When I hooked it to MC 11, it asked me to initialize which I did. Then the sync didn't work, so I went back to MC 10.) That seemed strange to me, but might point to something?

francelonian and tlongacre,

What happens when you drag and drop 2 or 3 files onto iPod? Do they transfer?

MC 11 should not ask about intializing your iPod. Tlongacre, can you post what version of the Portable Drive plugin MC 11 is runnning for you?

Hmm, even with a new iPod that was just formatted, MC shouldn't ask to initialize? I thought that was a necessity?

How do I find the plug-in version? I've not actually installed a plug-in separately for a very long time.

I did try just dragging files onto the "Handheld" box and got the same results. Is that what you mean?

tlongacre,

This might be starting to make sense. Go to Tools->Plugin Manager->Handheld->Portable Drives and see what version you see. Is it 11.0.16 ?

Sorry - forgot I was using build 109.  When I go back to build 113 the version is 16.

And when I transfer a file to the iPod it crashes the same way.

tlongacre and francelonian,

Please get tonight's build of MC 11 and then try again after the install. Try drag and drop first, then sync.

Thanks,

Just tried v. 117 -- did not work. Got the same Media Core error, both when I tried to sync and when I tried to drag and drop/transfer files.

My Portable device version is .17 and my WMDM version is .05 (if that matters).

The drive *is* now showing up as "IPOD F:", so that's an improvement.

Ditto.  Same behaviour as 113.  Also, in the 117 notes it says:

6. Changed: Readded right-click synchronization option for Portables.

For me, not so much :)

When I right click, no change as compared to 113.

tlongacre and francelonian,

Go to your MC 11\Data\Default Resources directory and check the date on your PDT.xml file. If it is from 10/12/04, this is a problem. There is problem with MC updating that file which is critical to how MC interacts with portables. Someone is working on it. In the meantime, if you email me, I will email you back the correct file you need and you can manually replace it to see if things improve.

Thanks,

Steve,

These new files seem to have done the trick.

Only good news to report this time!

R/Click in AW present and correct.
Speed of synch 4.40s
Info sent to MC11 correctly on both "number plays" and "last played".

Excellent! Thanks very much.

Deleted MC 11.

Rebooted

Deleted its dir

Rebooted

Installed build 117

Copied the XML file into the directory.

No change - crashed just after the delete file phase of the sync (I have randomized Smartlists, so there is always a delete, then the install)

But I do appreciate your efforts, a lot.

harumph. I'm with francelonian, although I didn't do all the deleting and reinstalling he did. I just put the files in the appropriate places. MC11 does call it "TEL's iPod" which is correct and I do get the Synchronize option on the right click menu.

But as ever, once I start the sync, it does it's deletes and tries to start transferring the first file and then I get a Media Core error and it bombs.

I'll be back  :D
