Testing Transfer/Sync to Notebook!
« on: November 10, 2004, 05:33:35 pm »

I am trying to test this new feature of MC11 by transfering 11594 jpg-files from one disk to another. Here my first experiences.

1) Some help and guideline on how to use this new feature would be helpful, especially for the options.

2) Defined a backup folder and try to transfer some of my image files to this folder with the subfolder creation option set.

3) While building up the queue I get the following message:

You are attempting to transfer multiple files with duplicated information. Would you like to continue?
Then it says that some 1107 files are duplicated!

Could it be that files named like that are being treated as duplicates?

Arts\Monet, Claude\Self-Portrait.jpg
and
Arts\Van Gogh, Vincent\Self-Portrait.jpg
?

Many files have the same name although they are in separate folders! Is this a problem for transfering files?

4) Building up of transfer queue is very slow and transfer speed can vary from very slow to quite fast!

5) During initial transfer MC11 crashed twice. What happens in such a case?
Are all files already transmitted transfered again?

I've had the same problem - I'm not sure I even had duplicate filenames though.

Non-audio files will be recopied anyway!  MC bases its synching rules on various fields, including the album, being the same.  Unfortunately it populates the album field with the file modification date, which is almost always different on the destination device.  This behaviour is under review, so I hope it gets changed.

Ian and Jaguu,

When MC goes to send files it will report as 'duplicates' any files which have the same Name, Artist, Album, Genre and Track Number.  Jaguu, I think your 1107 files probably fall into this category. Am I correct?

SteveG,

I don't think the way you define 'duplicates' works properly for image files.

It can happen that you define only the people, event, places field for images and that the filename (or pathname) are the only unique identifier for a file.

You could have 20 images tagged the following way

Artist=""
Name=""
Album=""
Track=""
Genre=Holidays
People=You and me"
Place="Sunset Boulevard"
Event=Your birthday party"

According to your definitions those would be duplicates, but in reality they are 20 different images with distinguished filenames.

So I think you have to change the way that duplicates are going to be handled!

Jaguu,

We will have to revisit this problem. Sync was not originally designed for photos and now we have to come up with a new way to revise this.
