Newbie question about recognizing audio CDs
« on: February 02, 2005, 10:11:10 am »

(If this is the wrong forum for this post then please tell me where I should have posted my question).

I have just downloaded and installed MC 10 and, overall, I like it a lot.

However, when I put an audio CD (store-bought) in my cd drive I get the message:

Quote
Media Center has detected a new CD in drive G: but cannot get the correct volume information.  Please try ejecting and reinserting the CD.
I have tried several CDs, and I have tried CDEX on the same CDs and it recognizes them without complaint.
I am able to burn audio CDs on the same CD drive, but MC10 can't read the CDs that MC10 itself created. ?

I am using MC 10 version 10.0.173.

Thanks,

Don.

Paste your System Info from MC Help menu here. It may help to help...

Can MC recognize any CDs on the drive? For example, data CDs that have audio files.

Alex:

Here is my system info:

Quote
Media Center 10.0.173 -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\

Microsoft Windows 2000  Workstation 5.0 Service Pack 4 (Build 2195)
Intel Pentium III 791 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 522 MB, Free - 344 MB

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106 / ComCtl32.dll: 5.81 / Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1584 (xpsp2.040720-1705) / Shell32.dll: 5.00.3900.6975 / wnaspi32.dll: N/A
Ripping /   Drive G:   Mode:Normal  Type:Auto  Speed:Max
Digital playback: Yes /  Use YADB: Yes /  Get cover art: No /  Calc replay gain: Yes /  Copy volume: 32767
Eject after ripping: Yes /  Play sound after ripping: No

Burning /  Drive G: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8520B    Addr: 1:0:0  Speed:32  MaxSpeed:32  BurnProof:Yes
Test mode: No /  Eject after writing: Yes /  Direct decoding: Yes /  Write CD-Text: Yes
Use playback settings: No /  Normalization: None

But, I have got it working now and the above reflects a working system.

I noticed that the properties on my CD drive did not have the "Enable Digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" checked.  I checked this and re-booted.  After which MC-10 could read my CDs ok.

Does this make sense?

Thanks,

Don.

Perfect sense. The interesting thing is how CDEX could read the volume info. Perhaps it can override the OS setting.
