DVD's via Library Server?
« on: March 02, 2005, 11:44:28 am »

I have ripped a few DVDs that I own (saved as VOB files) onto harddrive.  This is a local hard drive to the MC Library Server machine.
These play fine through MC 11 on the machine where MC and the DVD files reside.

If I connect to Library Server via a client machine, music plays fine, mpg and avi videos that I saved from camcorder play fine.
But the DVDs display an error message:
"Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files.   Error: Unknown error.   Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location.

In the client library, the file path shows this:
m01p://hostnameofserver:4900/F:\dvd\movie name\VIDEO_TS\\VTS_01_1.dvd;1

the only thing I see wrong with this is that VTS_01_1.dvd  is really .vob and not .dvd on the hard drive.

Check the library to see if the path is correct .

the library server shows:
F:\dvd\The Movie\VIDEO_TS\\VTS_01_1.dvd;1      (this plays fine)

the client shows:
m01p://server:4900/F:\dvd\The Movie\VIDEO_TS\\VTS_01_1.dvd;1

windows file manager shows:
f:\dvd\The Movie\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB

remote client is the only thing that won't work.
client and server are on same build of MC11 (201).

I've never tried this before so can't say if it's ever worked.
The server's library loads fine on the client.
All music (.mp3), images (.jpg) and videos (.mpg or .avi) work fine from the client.

I can email you the URL to my library server privately and you can see from your end if you like.  Let me know what address you want it sent to.

When the next build comes out, remove them from your library (but not the disk) and reimport them.
That should fix it

Has there been any improvement with this functionallity?
I have just started looking at this app and I like it but the network server function is what I want the most.
I am seeing the same symptoms with DVD files.
They play fine on the server but have the same error on attempt to play on network client.

I ripped a home rolled DVD and a commercial DVD to disk (IFO and VOB files) and tested with same results.

The server/client plays audio and windows media files OK thru network.
Is this a supported function at all??  The documentation seems to indicate serving audio and pictures but not DVD video specifically.

Some observations:

When importing the DVD files to the server library a folder is created named Unnamed Disc which does contain some of the DVD files.
The import log shows this activity but gives the location a hex number (which shows up in the path of the client).

***
9:26:52 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles: Adding: E:\dvds\DICKIE ROBERTS\VIDEO_TS.IFO
9:26:52 PM: Import: ImportNewFiles:     New File: (0x34D0093A):\VIDEO_TS.dvd;1
***

In place of Unnamed disc on the client side is m01p://192.168.1.212:8234/(0x34D0093A):

The path/filename is consistent with this on server and client when CTRL-F view shows filenames.

If I locate the files on the hard disk that are in the Unnamed Disc folder of the library and move them so MC can't find them the DVD will not play on the server either...same error.

part of the import log is included below.  appears to be excluding a couple of the files and it appears that they are the ones placed in the odd location mentioned above.
This library was cleared twice and MC was restarted before this import.
