"The parameter is incorrect." warning message
« on: April 15, 2005, 06:02:18 pm »

Moved from Re: Media Center 11.0.241 Beta Available

Quote from: BernieD / 11.0.240 thread
Quote
During install the message "The Parameter is Incorrect" appears twice.  Seems to occur when the file assocications is being displayed.  During operation of the installed applicationl, it happens again every time I go into Tools\Options at dialog show time and again when I click OK on the options dialog to close it.

Quote from: Alex B / 11.0.240 thread
Quote
For me it didn't happen on install, but when trying to use Options it happens. "The parameter is incorrect" warning window comes up every time when the Options window is opened and when trying to make changes to its settings

With 241 this happened twice during the installation. Clicking OK let me continue.

It happens also everytime when I open "Options" and every time I try to save options. There is no way to get past that except cancelling the options.

I guess I have to revert again.

Alex,
We need to understand what's different.  I don't see the problem you describe.

I wonder if you could try a default install (as a test).

Alex B,
Can you start a new thread on your problem?  It's probably ours, but it may take some time to narrow down.

Is it a custom install you do?

Network drive involved?

Anything else not the default or common way of doing things?

Custom install. The only customized thing is the MC path. During the installation the warning  comes up first time on the skin selection window and second time on the following window (file associations).

Here is the debug log:  AlexB_Log.zip

During the logging I installed build 241 (if the installation was registered), started MC, opened "Options", changed something there, tried to save the options a couple of times and closed MC.

I hope the log helps. I could try a default install and my other PCs too later on this weekend.

It does seem like the path is the likely problem.

We made some changes with encoders in the last couple of builds that could affect this.

I saw this message as well, but only at the Appearance Selection screen and I haven't seen it since.

My install is custom, but the only options I change are Shortcut on Desktop (turned off) and Quicklaunch (turned on).  My install path is default.

The problems I had a couple of days ago may have been related to this. The first install I did was custom (installed to C: J River... instead of defailt C: Program Files\J River...). Everything went ok when I did the Express (default) install.

This only started happening with the build 240. I've never seen that warning before.

I've always used custom install paths. On my main MC/HTPC the programs are in C:\Soft\[a short abbreviation]\, though there are some rare cases when a badly programmed program needs to be in C:\Program Files\[default installation folder]\.

On my laptop I have used the default paths because the manufacturer had already preinstalled many programs there. I'll try this build on it using the default installation options.

I have this same problem also. I did the express install and got the error message twice, can't remember where one occured but the other was definately at file associations. Now everytime i press OK in the option dialog i get the error message and i can't continue until i press the cancel button.

PS. I use the default location

Can you see if you have anything in common?  It would help to reproduce the problem.

I can't think of much which i have done which out of the ordinary......
As the problem appears to be related to file associations, this info might be useful:
I use the Real Alternative Codecs.
I have played with the mkv support (which still doesn't work).
Other than that, i have the usual pile of codecs, but nothing unusual.
Unfortunately, i jumped from 205 to 240 so i guees you have made quite a few changes in that time....
I only have one pc in the house at the mo so it's a bit difficult to back things up, but let me know if there is anything i can investigate to help.
cheers

I received the same warnings using express install. It then replied that the install wasn't complete and it wanted to restart windows. Unfortunately, I have other programs running and can't let it do that at the moment, but we'll see what it does once that happens.

I've got the error as well.  I don't use a custom install directory, but I do use the custom option (because I like to uncheck the Desktop Icon and Start Menu options as I keep the Start Menu items elsewhere and the Desktop icon renamed to "Media Center").  I also get it when entering the Options Pane.

I have my library local, but my files on a network drive.  I have an ATI Remote Wonder (and that software is running on the computer), in addition to a VNC Server (TightVNC currently),  Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate, and nVidia's Mixer program.  I too have the usual CODECS (Gordian Knot Codec Pack), but am not using RealAlternative currently (I will, I just haven't gotten around to installing it on this machine yet).

Reverting to 236 fixed the problem.  I also tried re-updating to .241 and using Express install.  No change.

Does anyone having the problem not have their files on a network drive?

(I added the bold in a couple messages above for network drive files.)

Are any of you folks running multiple installs of MC (MC10 and MC11)? Or have you recently installed over an install of MC9 or MJ8?

The reason I ask is because one user, majouz, is seeing a similar (but not worded exactly the same) message regarding parameters which appears to have been created by trying to run MJ8 and MC11 side by side.

I just tested it on my other machine with local files only.  Same result.

Not here.  My machines are both clean, original install of MC11 only (though my first install of it was quite a few builds ago).  Never had a previous version of MC on either machine though (since they were last nuke/paved).

I don't know what to look for. The most obvious difference is Hyper-Threading. My HTPC has it enabled. The other problem-free machines don't have it.

EDIT

These two PCs have local libraries. The media files are on the mapped network drives.

glynor and runemail seem to have Athlon machines. I guess Hyper-Threading must be excluded from the list of possible causes.

I have reinstalled too. (I did not uninstall.)

The problem is exactly as before.

I went through about every single function in MC. The warning seems to appear only in those four places. When installing it comes up on the skin selection and associations windows when clicking "Next". Afterwards it can be seen only when opening "Options" and when trying to close the Options window by clicking "OK".

The developers could now think about what those four places have in common.

P.S. During my testing I found this bug:

Tools > Advanced Tools > Windows Media Manager > clicking the Help button crashes MC instantly.

The problem is coming the file associations engine, although we're not sure why.

Tonight's build (11.0.242) adds logging to this area.  To help us:

1) Enable general logging (to a file) under Help > Configure Debug Logging...
2) Open Options
3) When the error appears, don't click OK
4) Open the log file and paste the last few lines here

The log will be here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\J River\Log.txt

Thanks for the help :)

I don't know if this helps, but I followed the instructions and when the error dialog appears, the following is in the log file:

i disabled all file associations during install.

one thing different from 241 after installing 243 is that i can now ok the option dialog and the changes i've made get saved, previously i could only use the close box which lost all the changes i made.

oh well, spoke too soon, it's now gone back to not accepting the ok button so it's screwed. and it's definately in the file association part.  the next time i tried the options and clicked on ok it generated the incorrect parameter message and shifted into file association tab by itself.  i still have no files associated (which is how i what it)

A couple of new logs made with the build 243:

AlexB_logs(TheFilenamesDescripeWhat_I_DidDuringTheLogging).zip

During the first log:  I reset logging, clicked OK in the logging window and pressed Ctrl+O [the warning appeared].

The second log includes the first log and the next events: clicked OK in the warning window and clicked OK in the options window [the warning appeared again].

I'll post some tonight (assuming tonight's build doesn't fix the problem before I get home).  I didn't have time to muck with it yesterday.

Thanks everyone.  We're getting closer.

Tonight's build creates option pages on demand instead of all at once.  This will let us know for certain what page causes the error.  We'll also add a little more logging.

Thanks again.

When opening the options dialog with .244 the error only occurs when I navigate to the "File Associations" section, at least the first time.  It seems that the error occurs when I try to close the Options dialog, no matter what "section" I am currently viewing through the Options dialog's "validation" routine.  It then flips my "section" back to File Associations when I click "OK" to the error.

Because of this, even though the error didn't appear the FIRST time I opened the Options Dialog in MC after upgrading, it does every time now because it always "saves" that I was last viewing the File Association options.  I'm now trying to think of what I have customized in that dialog...

The main thing is that I have all the video file types deselected (for the most part) and the audio types selected.  I also do not have the option to "Re-take" associations selected (as I can defend them myself and I don't use the Media Scheduler).

One thing I noticed this time is that I actually can't access many of the options in that dialog (on this machine) because I use the "Large" system fonts (120 DPI) on my HTPC and the panes don't all fit.  Since the dialog isn't resizable, lots gets cut off and I can't get to it.

If anyone that sees this problem is available to do some testing of custom builds today, drop me a line at matt @ jriver.com.

Thanks.

Here is a log for the 244 build:

AlexB_Log_build244.zip

No changes in behaviour. The errors happen exactly as before.

Matt, I sent the mail you asked.

Thanks Alex.

For now, try the build that just went up.  It adds some more debug logging and changed a few things.

If the problem still occurs, we may need to send custom builds back-and-forth a few times.

Thanks again.

With 11.0.245 I got errors only in two places.

- Only one error when installing: on the associations window when clicking "Next".
Clicking "OK" makes it go away and opens the next window.

- And when trying to close the Options window by clicking "OK".

Opening the Options doesn't trigger the error message anymore. However, it's still not possible to save options, because clicking "OK" in the warning window doesn't close the Options window.

Thanks guys.

It looks like a certain registry keys are causing problems.  I sent emails to you both -- hopefully the result will shed some light on this.

Well, I had a theory last night, and tested it, and now I'm even more confused than ever.

I have two machines, as I mentioned above.  Both are almost identical in hardware and software configurations (I'll run through the list in a moment), and until last night, both exhibited the problem.  My theory was that the error had something to do with the Media Scheduler and the "Reclaim File Associations" option that appears on the File Associations options pane.  I'm still not convinced that the problem is not related to that, but my results were mixed.  Does anyone who is getting this error typically run with the Media Scheduler (and Reclaim File Associations) selected?  I know that at least Alex and I do not.

My HTPC has exhibited the error with every build since .236.  I had been testing each build, and then reverting back to .236 on that machine, but I last left .244 installed (since the error wasn't as obnoxious on that build).  On my "Main PC", I had only tried .240 once, seen the error, and then reverted back to .236 (and kept it that way).  Actually, because I am in the process of moving, my "Main PC" was torn down until last night.

Anyhow, my theory was that the Media Scheduler and/or File Assoc. Reclaiming was causing the error if it wasn't selected when you installed a .240+ build.  So, on my Main PC, I selected the File Reclaim option from inside build .236 (which started the Media Scheduler) and then upgraded to .245.  No error!   So far, so good.  So then I de-selected the Media Scheduler and File Assoc. option, got the Media Scheduler to actually close and stay closed (which involved deselecting another option in Options - General), and then opened MC and the Options, hoping I'd see the error.  Still no error.  So, I thought it must have to do with actually having the option de-selected when you perform the upgrade.  I reverted back to .236, made sure the option was de-selected, performed the upgrade to .245 (rebooting inbetween).  Still no error!  Somehow, I seem to have fixed the error on my Main PC.  So, I figured I would perform somewhat of the same procedure on my HTPC and give that a whirl...

Using a similar procedure, I couldn't get the error to go away on my HTPC.  However, I also couldn't get the Media Scheduler to run by selecting that option during the Install procedure.  It seemed that I needed to actually select the option from inside the Options panel (as I did with my Main PC) from inside the .236 build.

Unfortunately, I can't access this option on my HTPC due to the large font problem I mentioned above (please make the options form resizable -- I don't care that it "correctly" resizes proportionally, just let me make it bigger so I can get to those other options -- or make it scale the form correctly for large fonts).  I thought about disabling the large fonts in the persuit of knowledge, but I ran out of time and patience with my wife (who wanted to watch the most recent episode of Deadwood).

Either way, the procedure I performed on that machine was not identical (I wish it could have been, but such is life).  I initially had .244 installed on that machine.  I tried upgrading to .245 but selecting the Reclaim/Media Scheduler option.  No dice (still had the error), however I actually had the error before being allowed to select that option, so maybe that broke it...  As I mentioned, the Media Scheduler did not actually start when I selected this option, so it seemed like the option wasn't "taking".  I reverted to .236, selected the option during the install.  Rebooted. Ran MC (the Media Scheduler actually did run this time). I then upgraded to .245.  Still got the error.

Argh!!!  As I said, I can't even confirm that the Reclaim Assoc. option is selected on my HTPC (even though the Media Scheduler was running) because I can't see that option in the dialog.  So...

More confused than ever.

Code: [Select]
Machine details:

MainPC:  Athlon XP 2000+, ASUS A7N8X-X (nForce2), Sapphire X800XL AGP (with dual VGA display extended desktop), 1GB DDR400 RAM sync with processor (CAS2 timings), Creative SB Audigy2, Promise ATA133 PCI Card, and a big pile of hard drives, Intel Pro Gigabit LAN PCI.

HTPC: Athlon XP-M 2600+ (not overclocked), ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe, ATI AIW X800XT (TV primary, VGA monitor secondary cloned), identical RAM to Main, onboard sound (I'm saving for a M-Audio), Promise S150 SX4 SATA RAID PCI Card w/ 128MB PC133 RAM, another big pile of hard drives, Intel Pro Gigabit LAN PCI.

The software outlay on the machines is really almost identical.  Both are XPSP2 with fully up-to-date drivers.  The Main PC has some games the HTPC doesn't have installed, and the HTPC has the DVD Player/Codec from ATI's MMC, TV, and Guide+ installed (whereas the Main PC only has the Video In tool installed from ATI's software).

Well, it took me too long to type up that book and Matt posted in the meantime.  I'd be happy to help tonight if it is still needed, but I don't get home from work until 5:30-ish Eastern.  Feel free to email me (glynor AT nospamspiders hotmail dot com).

I also thought I would mention ... If it turns out to be needed, last night (just before being kicked off the HTPC) I suspected that it could be a registry setting, so I exported the HKCU/Software/JRiver key for both machines and have the .reg files saved at home.  I planned to try comparing them if there was no progress tonight...

Try replacing your Media Center.exe with this one:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp/MediaCenter246.zip

The go to Options > File Assocations with logging enabled.  Hopefully the errors will be gone.  However, the log should output an "Exception (...)" for some type.

Let us know what the exception lines say.

Thanks again!

Could you try the logging thing and post the lines that show "Exception" in them?  We're trying to track down exactly why this was happening.

Thanks.

No errors anymore.

Here are the new logs: 246testbuildLogs.zip

In the first one I just opened the Options and closed it by clicking OK. In the second one I also enabled the Media Containers (mkv, ogm) association.

Could you export HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.ogm with RegEdit, and email it to matt @ jriver.com?

Thanks.
