I would like to build a toolbar similar style of google desktop search that will allow me to type an artist name, song, maybe even search by artist - track title.   then I can search from a drop down list of websites (discogs.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, and a couple of my fav. online record shops). 

I'm sure this type of toolbar has been developed long ago, but the majority of my music collection is non-commercial music that is not listed on allmusic.com, freedb.com, or similar sites.

I'm confident i can teach myself how to build the above, but i have no idea where to begin.  Do i need a particular software?

Opera browser does exactly this, if thats of any interest. A single letter determines the site, and you can program them to whatever you want.
