Scrolling slow when...
« on: May 22, 2005, 07:45:06 pm »

a column is very large/vertically tall.  When it is smaller, scrolling is very fast i.e. i get many 'clicks' for one full scroll.  Where as when the column is say full screen or closer to that, even half way, I only get maybe 3 'clicks' per scroll.  This applies to both the selection area in media library as well as the panes.  I have played around with each and when the panes are smaller, scrolling is faster while the selction area is slow.  To add I don't have a scrolling issue in any other program besides MC.

Is anyone else having ths problem?
Is this due to hardware or is it something that MC does?

Also uniinstalled intellipoint software and used my old logitech mouse and the problem is still there.  Is anyone else noticing that the scrolling seems choppy.  It's not slow in terms of the number of rows it scrolls per 'click' but slow in that I only get like 3 clicks per scroll.

Actually, it seems slow for me all the time. This is with the mouse wheel, keyboard, or scroll bar.

I see what you are saying.  Another interesting characteristic is that when using the up down arrows to scroll in MC, the up arrow is much slower than the down arrow.  Of course the smoothness improves when the are fewer viewable rows in the selection area.  Another thing to note is that MC does not incorporate the 'microsoft smooth scrolling' feature that allows the speed of your scroll wheel to change depending on how you use it.

Overall the Scrolling in MC is best described as sluggish and choppy.  It's not something I would stop using MC for but it deffinetly underperforms compared to other programs in windows.  Hmmm, wondering if there is some issue on my side or if 'many' others are having the same scrolling performance.

Is there a setting in windows/MC that I can chage to fix this, or does JRiver need to look into this?

I noticed it early on but figured it was something for MC12.
Like you said, MC does not seem to incorporate "smooth scrolling" or any form of accelerated scrolling.  I don't know whether the amount of data can affect this, and I doubt whether a list of 20,000 songs can ever scroll as fast as a web page, but this would be a very cool feature to implement.  If caching is the issue, I would guess that those with a lot of songs also have a lot of RAM.

jgreen, the scrolling on my computer is still choppy whether I have list of 4,405 songs or 30 songs.  I get the same number of clicks per revolution of the wheel.  It's a good question though about RAM.  Do other users with new computers experience this problem?

modelmaker, how many times does the scroll bar move for every time you do a full scroll on the mouse wheel?  I get between 2-4 on the main selection area and like 15-20 on the panes.

Thanks for your input.
