MC11 Library server problem
« on: May 23, 2005, 03:09:03 pm »

I'm having some problems with Library Server -- I hadn't used it before in V11, so I can't say if it's unique to this build or not.

I'm not able to load a library using Library Manager, when I set it up manually.  I've setup Library Server across a local network.  On the client PC, if I manually add the server PC by IP address and port (i.e. 192.168.0.100:81), it accepts it, but does not actually load anything.  If I use "Search for Media Servers", it lists the PC by name and port (Workstation33 : 81).  If I select that, the Library loads correctly and shows the library's IP/port under Media Center in top center of the screen.  The IP shown is the same as the one that was created manually, but does not load when selected via Library Manager.

The second issue, which is more troubling, is that not all thumbnails are coming through.  For now, I am sharing only images (jpgs at this point).  The view schemes show (i.e. People/Places/Events) and 90-95% of the thumbnails show.  I tried selecting "Build Missing Thumbnails" on the client a few times (and also the server), and although it reported doing the task, the thumbnails are still missing on the client PC.  If I "play" the image, the fullsize one shows in Now Playing.  I also tried connecting and re-connecting, but the same images are missing thumbnails in the view scheme.

EDIT: I was able to get the missing thumbnails by editing the view scheme on the client and changing the thumbnail size to something different.  Changing it back to the original worked then also.

Just a guess, but are you loading the library after entering the name? It's a two step process. First you add the library to your list of libraries (this is where you enter the name), then you select it and click the Load button. Otherwise, you are not loading it.

Yes, that what I'm doing...add it to the list, then either choose Load from the Library manager dialog box, or select it on the Library sub-menu.  I have to use the "Search for Media Servers" for it to load.

Double check the IP address. Are you using DHCP? Maybe the IP is changing between the time you create the library and try to access it?

I can't reproduce it here, and it's not a general problem, so any ideas on what's different about your situation?

No DHCP.  The server is using a static IP (192.168.0.xxx) across a local network.  I've now tried it on 2 different PCs (both running Windows 2000 Prof and now 11.0.275, server is XP Prof) with the exact same behavior.  A manually added Library doesn't do anything and shows an empty library, whereas Search for Library Servers finds the same IP/port and loads it correctly.

I also continued to have thumbnail issues after I tried using it on a 2nd client PC.  About 20% of the thumbnails don't show up, and this time erasing and rebuilding and/or changing the thumbnail size didn't work to get them to show up.  I did notice that the server Library Server log occasionally shows:

05/23/05 19:26:16 - Connection refused, too many connections at this time

Not sure if it has anything to do with it.

While playing around with it, I also got the following critical error on the PC:

"Media Center has encountered critical error #31.  Some essential component is missing or corrupted."

What's the plugin page showing on Library Server? Any status messages?

No status messages when selecting the manually-entered one.

More importantly now, build 278 broke the client's ability to find the library server using auto-detect...now when I choose that option, I get a "Failed to find local Media Server" dialog box.

I downgraded to build 276 on the client, and it works again (the server was left at 278).

I can't reproduce this here. The network code for library server hasn't changed. Could it be something else interfering? A plugi-in or something? Anyone else having this trouble?

192.168.0.100:81

Is it possible that another application uses the same port? Have you tried other ports? E.g. 192.168.0.100:50050  (not commonly known to be used by applications or trojans according to www.grc.com)

Port 81

Name:

Purpose:
HOSTS2 Name Server

Description:
We have no idea what this port's historical use was, and neither, apparently, does anyone else. It is listed (as shown above) on everyone's "port list", but no further information is ever offered.

Its current use, and its importance today, is due to is adjacency to the super-popular "http" world wide web port 80. Sometimes an "off the beaten path" web server will be established to listen not to port 80, but to an alternate related port such as 81, 82, 8080, or 8090. (Related by proximity or appearance.) So port 81 is only noteworthy today because it is a neighbor to port 80 and is sometimes used, as an adjunct or alternative, in the same way.

I have tried different ports, like 8031 & 8032.  It is on a local network.  It works (at least with 276) auto-detecting, but not when manually creating it.  When manually created, it does not even show the "searching" dialog box...it just opens up a blank library immediately.

The bigger issue now is that auto-search is broken in 278, but not in 276.  I am not running any non-included plug-ins.  If I install 278, the client fails to find the server...if I downgrade to 276 it works (never tried 277).  Something must be different in 276 vs. 278 that is causing the behavior change on the client side.

I see.

I have not tried the auto-search since last year or so. I just click the stored server address (192.168.0.52:4798) in File > Library. That part has worked like a charm.

I have reverted to 276 too because of other issues. I'll try this with the next build.

When manually created, it does not even show the "searching" dialog box...it just opens up a blank library immediately.

I have a small default local library on my PCs. MC opens it if the server is off-line. Could that make any difference?
