Smartlist Questions and Answers
« on: June 13, 2005, 05:08:44 pm »

Can anyone help with this smartlist idea:

I want to add all my greatest hits/best of albums to a smartlist - as you probably know some albums have different names - ultimate, essential, etc....  In going through my library I have found several others - I tried to come up with a smartlist to include these (and to exclude certain genres i.e. speech) - I came up with this smartlist and it does okay but it still grabs photos, and it doesn't exclude some of the genres.  I am not sure what I am doing wrong - I have tried several differnent combinations (i.e - genre exclusions first, albums first - then reversed, etc).  Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is an example of my attempts:

1 - [Media Type]=[Audio] -[Genre]=[Children],[Christmas],[Comedy] [Album]=[best],[Thank You] of or greatest or chronicles or remaster or Best or definitive or decade or "all world”

2 - On this one I had to go in and manually select the albums I didn't want included after I entered the initial request - I don't want to do that....

[Album]=[1],[Best of] or "greatest" or "all world" or "thank you" or "ultimate" or "essential" or "best" or "chronicles" or "remaster" or "decade" or "definitive" -[Album]=[],[1//2//2004],[1//10//2003],[1//11//2003],[1//11//2005],[1//12//2003],[2//1//2003],[2//10//2004],[2//10//2005],[2//12//2003],[2//14//2003],[2//14//2004],[2//18//2003],[2//19//2003],[3//3//2003],[3//6//2004],[3//8//2003],[3//10//2004],[3//14//2004],[3//19//2003],[3//22//2003],[3//22//2005],[3//23//2005],[3//24//2004],[3//30//2003],[4//1//2003],[4//2//2003],[4//3//2003],[4//7//2003],[4//9//2004],[4//10//2003],[4//12//2003],[4//12//2004],[4//15//2004],[4//18//2003],[4//20//2005],[4//29//2005],[5//2//2005],[5//5//2003],[5//8//2003],[5//9//2003],[5//23//2003],[5//24//2005],[6//19//2003],[6//20//2004],[7//18//2003],[7//30//2003],[8//6//2002],[8//8//2003],[8//11//2003],[8//18//2003],[8//19//2003],[8//29//2003],[9//3//2003],[9//4//2003],[9//6//2003],[9//7//2003],[9//25//2003],[10//15//2003],[10//17//2003],[10//18//2002],[10//19//2002],[10//19//2003],[10//20//2003],[10//21//2003],[10//24//2003],[10//28//2003],[10//29//2004],[10//30//2003],[10//31//2003],[11//3//2003],[11//6//2003],[11//21//2004],[11//27//2004],[11//28//2004],[11//29//2004],[12//1//2004],[12//2//2004],[12//5//2003],[12//9//2004],[12//14//2004],[12//17//2004],[12//18//2004],[12//27//2003],[A Place In The Sun],[Abraxas (Remastered)],[Alive (remastered) - Disc 2],[Alive (remastered)- Disc 1],[Alright Guy],[American Child],[Ben Folds Live],[Best of Bellydance from Morocco, Egypt, Lebanan, Turkey],[Best Of KROQ's Kevin & Bean: A Family Christmas In Your Ass],[Brand New Day],[Brand New Second-Hand],[Bring On The Night - Disc 1],[Classic Disney Volume II],[ code ],[Common Thread: The Songs of The Eagles],[Cow Fish Fowl or Pig],[Cuts Like a Knife],[De Stijl],[Disney's Greatest Volume 1],[Disney's Music From The Park],[Dreamstealers],[Drum and Bass Warfare (Disc 1)],[Empire],[Essential Christmas],[Funk Essentials (CD1)],[Funk Essentials (CD2)],[Funk Essentials (CD3)],[Funk Essentials (CD4)],[Hell's Ditch],[Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury],[I Just Can't Stop It],[KROQ The Best Of The Almost Acoustic Christmas],[Led Zeppelin II],[Make Believe],[Mud On The Tires],[No Quarter],[Nothings Shocking],[Philadelphonic],[Punk O Rama 4],[Punk You],[Robbin' The Hood],[Roots Reggae Essentials],[Sehnsucht],[Shania Twain - Up! - Green Disc],[Shania Twain - Up! - Red Disc],[Shark Tale (OST)],[Southern Accents],[Staying Power],[Supa Dupa Fly],[The Best Of Redd Foxx],[The Best Uncensored Crank Calls (Vol 2)],[The Best Uncensored Crank Calls Vol. 1],[The Chipmunk's Greatest Christmas Hits],[The Ultimate Party Survival Kit],[The Very Best of Burl Ives Christmas],[Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge],[Time Out (Remastered)],[Title of Record],[Total Terror Part 1],[Under The Table And Dreaming],[Word Of Mouf]

3 - and yet another attempt:

[Media Type]=[Audio] -[Genre]=[Children],[Christian Rock],[Christmas],[Comedy],[Speech] [Album]=[1],[Best of] or "greatest" or "all world" or "thank you" or "ultimate" or "essential" or "best" or "chronicles" or "remaster" or "decade" or "definitive"

None of these seem to work perfectly - I don't know what the logic for the smartlist is (how does it choose which part to do first?)

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I'm a new user trialling MC and before I buy I need to know if it is capable of doing the following and if so , what the expression would look like.
What I want to do is have two smart playlists controlled by a third smart playlist. The third playlist would draw regular music tracks from the first playlist, but at a pre-determined interval (say every 4th or 5th track for example) it would insert a short voice track promo from the second smart playlist.  It doesn't matter if this was a random track from that list or not. Is this possible? Or is there a better way to do it? eg every 4th or 5th track selected from a special genre such as promo from the main library?

I have noticed this type of expression in another thread (below), it goes close but It often ends up with too many promo tracks adjacent to each other and then will have a long break before any more are used.
~mix=466,80%,{[Genre]=[Blues]},10%,{[Genre]=[Rock]},10%,{[Genre]=[Promo]}

Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. What I have in mind is for an automated radio purpose.
thanks in advance,
Geoff

Hi,

I'm trying to compose a Smartlist of Artists who have 5 or less Tracks associated to them, to snag & rate all the weird & wonderfuls I've accumulated over the years, but I cannot find the modifiers to do this.

It's probably me, therefore could some kind soul provide me with the formula to achieve this?

Thanks in Advance,
Mike

I've merged three threads here.  If you have favorite smartlists you can share, please post them here:

Sort of an evening  bump for the second message in this thread...... However I am having trouble viewing this topic using Firefox, a very wide screen requiring the horizontal scroll bar and all text after the first message is invisible. Ok in IE. Is thisa a known problem?
thanks,

I get the same here, I think it's cos it's a merged thread, but my firefox symptoms are the same, fine in IE, first time I've had to resort to IE in 6+ months, forgot how terrible it really is!

Ok, it's not just me then. Either because it's merged or because the first post has gone to about 2 feet wide. Other threads look ok, and this one can be read in Firefox when replying? Weird! let's hope someone can point us in the right direction re playlists. cheers.

It seems that IE can wrap long unspaced text strings after commas, but Firefox cannot.

Not sure if this is going to help, but if i had to do this, here is what i would do.

- Create a user defined field called Best or whatever you want to call it. It only needs to hold a letter in it Y or yes.

- In the library, you can enter in the search box al=best ultimate (or any other synonym). This will bring up all albums that has the string best or ultimate in it.

Another way to do this, is to single click and album you want, then press ctrl and select/hilite more albums in the list.

- Then go into the tags window (Alt +Enter), find the user defined field best and set it to Y or Yes.

- Repeat the same for all albums you want included.

Create a viewscheme with the fields you are interested in and the in the step 4 part of the view schem dialog have a rule like Best = Y

Thats it.

As opposed to writing a specific smartlist that would include/exclude all what you want , would get unwieldy quickly.

I'm not sure whether its possible to get the number of tracks assocaited with an album as yet. It might be with expressions but am not aware of it.

Is there a Count= expression as yet ?

I would defnitely welcome the ability to do this.

Not at this time as its not possible to sequentially chain smartlists together. You can't add a smartlist to a playlist either. That could be an interesting ability to have.

I imagine you would only need to add a smartlist that randomly picked 4 tracks, Then add a smartlist that would pick one random promo track. Now if you had continous play set, the smartlist could refresh each time it looped through, giving you 4 random tracks + 1 promo in sequence.

A custom plugin might be able to do this but you would have to request it on the plugins board and hope some one is interested in doing it.

Thanks for the idea, that indeed would be perfect. I will check out the plugins board. Unless someone sees this and can help.

Hello everybody.

All my audio mp3 files in MC are tagged with cover art inside.

I would like to know how it is possible to access properties of these images by some database expressions.

For example, how to make a smartlist that can list the files wich cover art width is smaller than 150px?

Thanks

Admin or broncodan

Any chance you could fix the firefox problem by breaking up the massive chunk of text in your 1st post? The less I use IE the better IMHO

Cheers,
Mike

Hmmm. A smartlist I had doesn't seem to work anymore.
Basically, it was a mix : 50% Rated 4,5, and 50% unrated.
To troubleshoot, I changed the limits from percentages to number of tracks.

I tried:
Media type: audio, Source: emusic and now for the good part:

Code: [Select]
([Rating]=>3 ~n=50 and [Rating]=>1 ~n=50)Also tried adding brackets around each before and after "and"
Code: [Select]
(([Rating]=>3 ~n=50) and ([Rating]=>1 ~n=50))Neither works.

Any takers?

This may not be a lot of work, but if you edit the tags for all of these songs and add "greatest hits" in the Comments field you should be able to filter on that.

I use Tag & Rename to do mass updates like that.  I can update all 35K+ files in my collection in short time.

The only downside is that you have to be sure to tag new files as you add them.
