Tagging standard fields problems
« on: July 23, 2005, 07:23:24 am »

This has been around for awhile for me...

The following fields seem to freeze MC for 2-4 seconds everytime I enter new data and press the enter button...

[Artist]
[Album Name]
[Track #]

Also when I use the stars to rate songs...

Anyone else having this problem?

I made a field titled "Artist (Seperated)" the other day and copied everything from the "Artist" field to the new field. When I edit the "Artist" field MC freezes but when I edit the "Artist (Seperated)" field MC runs smooth  ?

I've posted this problem a month or two back, but never received a response.
Yes, i'm having the same problem (mine will freeze for up to 12 seconds) when editing the following fields

Artist
Album
Track #
Fill Track #'s from list order
renaming files from properties
fill properties from filenames

The other fields are changed without delay.  This is a problem that only occured with v11.

noticed that MC doesn't freeze unless MC has been running for a bit...

also found that clearing the "replay gain" freezes MC

renaming files from properties

my bad MC doesn't seem to freeze when doing this

What else are you running with MC?  Any third party plug-ins?  What codec are you using?

I normally have the following plugins running...

aTagger
Audioscrobbler
Lyric Finder
Bios Finder
Playing Now

Most of my files (99%) use either ape or mp3

Earlier today I made a blank Library and then imported a few hundred songs...started tagging and everything worked smoothly...this is just a guess but might it be that I have 45,000+ files in the library?

Uninstall all plug-ins (as a test).

One thought that strikes me on looking at those fields is most of them are set to write to the file by default. If you look at the defintions of those fields in options, you will note "store in file where possible is ticked"

Also if those files do not have ID3v2 tags already they will have to be rewritten back to your drives, taking a bit longer. Now if your library is using networked drives there will be more delay. But once the ID3v2 tags are created things will be faster.

Is your "Artist (Seperated)" field set to write to the file as well ? Am guessing it might not be since you say its fast. MC just stores it in the library and does not touch the file.

You can speed things up if you set MC to never write/rewrite tags back to your files, meaning all info is stored in the library only.

Options->General->Update tags when file info changes (untick)

But i prefer that file tags & library stay in sync.

Almost all my tags are set to write to file but I did turn off the option to write to file and tested a few test files...problem still remains  :(

I've also drops a few test files into the playlist that were not imported and tagged...ran smoothly

I have noticed that tagging the Artist and Album fields is slower in MC11 than it was in MC10. I cannot anymore tag in Excel style rapidly jumping from a field to another. I must always wait for a second or so after writing the tag before MC finishes the tag and allows opening the next field for editing (I usually click the next field and press F2). This happens also when "Update tags when file info changes" is disabled in MC options.

These two fields have the dropdown menu, which was removed from the Name field some time ago. Tagging the Name field is instant.

I have 5536 Artist, 3866 Album and 30551 Name items in this library (without duplicates). The total number of files is 39509. The library and the media files are on a local latest generation serial ATA drive.

I have the same problem, but I think it depends on the total amount of files in the database because if I change tags using my sons database (containing 4000 files) tag changes are realized in 2 or 3 seconds while using my own database 200000+ files tag changes takes up to 15 secs.

When I switch to MC10 tag changes are almost imidiately.

Also if I want to add or change tracknumbers it takes up to 20secs before changes are made

I noticed the same this weekend.  I only imported 9,000 files and all field tagging ran smoothly just like in MC10.
