Writing Tags to m4a or aac or m4p files
« on: September 22, 2005, 12:06:39 am »

I try to use MC as my main library for maintaining my music collection. However, since the majority of my files are APEs and APLs, cross-platform & portable use suffers, so I convert the lossless versions to a lossy version for use with my Macintosh laptop & my iPod.

MC10 didn't do a good job of converting things to AAC/M4A formats, so I was forced to use foobar2k. As far as I can tell, there hasn't been much progress with MC11 in the handling of m4a files.

Here's my example:

1) Take an APL track that is properly tagged in MC & drag it from Windows Explorer to a FooBar window.

2) Run the conversion in FooBar. I use a command line converter that actually uses iTunes to do the AAC conversion. I'm left with an m4a file encoded with AAC.

3) I then drag the m4a file to fb2k and choose "Optimize mp4 layout" to make sure the tags are in the right order.

3) Drag the resulting m4a file to MC. Usually the song title, the artist & the album come over into MC. Where are all the rest of my tags? They are visible in fb2k...

If I edit the information within MC, the changes are not visible in either fb2k or in iTunes. Yes, I'm making sure that the tags are being updated... :)

Any ideas on what else to try (except moving entirely to fb2k?)

MC 11 doesn't read all of the tags from AAC files that I have created with iTunes, nor does it updates tags properly.  :'(

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't have a problem converting--foobar2k does that job admirably. The problem is maintaining the m4a tag information from MC. MC's library works fine, but existing tags on the m4a files aren't read or written properly.

Best,
