If I have missed something in the documentation, please forgive me, but I have a question.

I am using MC 11.0.316 and I do lots of backing up of CDs/DVDs/ to Image files on my disk drive (or .ISO files).

I really would like to replace what I am using know to create these files (Nero), and focus more on using MC for this.

Please tell me how can I copy a CD to an Image file?

I have gone the other way with MC, but creating a "Virtual Drive" with Daemon Tools to both play and burn backups from Image files. I wonder if I can also do that without having to use the Virtual Drive method.

I have no idea what you mean that MC is not a copying program ??

Reading and writing to an Image file is an extremely common feature of most software that burns, rips, encodes, etc. 
MC WILL copy from CDs, but a audio format has to be selected, like .oog, wav, etc.
Also, since MC allows for more than one copy to be burnt, it is doing copies. Basically an Image file is the "workarea" of the operation.

I would be hard pressed to think of other products that have the flexibility of MC's encoding, formating, ripping and burning features that do not have creating a Image File as an option.

If MC chooses not to do it, that's fine, hard to understand, but it's fine, but it certainly does copying.

I know that I can "fool" MC by using a program like Daemon tools to create a virtual drive, but it is an option that would by cool to have.

for DVDs, DVDshrink is great. You can not only back-up to .iso, but you can also reauthor the DVD in the process.

I don't think so. I guess the best you might be able to do is add daemon tools to the list of external apps MC can send files to. You'll have to figure out what is the correct command line to send to d-tools. Then you could set up MC to automatically play when a new media is inserted in your virtual drive, that is, when you mount an .iso.

I guess if you can figure out the right command line you might be able to start playing your back-ups with just a right click on your .iso from within MC.

The key word here is from. MC does not copy CDs. And even less DVDs.

MC is primarily a media player. I can't think of a player that allows you to create an image file. Most burning software have their own player but it's intended mainly for preview and none of them has any db function that's even remotely comparable to MC's.

I understand your point, and it would be really great if we had one program that does it all. MC only plays it all. But it does a fantastic job of doing so with a few extras (ripping, transfer to portale devices,...) and that's already something

You may not realize it, but if you have Nero (which I think is really the best general-purpose burning app out there) you can just drag-drop tracks directly from MC's interface into the Nero interface and then burn them.  This is how I put all my Video files onto disc, since MC also doesn't include a verify feature.

Just like lOth (and King) said though, no media players are really "full-featured" CD burning applications.  That's why there is a Nero, after all.

Nero 6 and 7 also does a whole lot more than burning and ripping.  It is almost looking like the burning and ripping part is becoming a minor part of Nero.

Following the trend to bloatware that will do everything mediocrely.  I've used Nero to burn for years, but I sure wish I didn't have to install all the other crap that comes with it.

That's true, but what I do like about Nero is that you don't have to install everything that comes with it.

I only install the base package and NVE (NVE only because it actually comes in handy sometimes for quick and dirty DVD burns off my DVR).  They, at least, offer updates online and offer downloadable versions (broken up into a few different hunks at least).

That's far more than you can say about the other major competition.
