Alert about duplicates
« on: December 02, 2005, 10:24:15 am »

If I import Images I already have in MC, MC doesn´t alert me of that, it only renames the new image.

I would like MC alert to me about an image with the same name exist in that directory, and (if possible) shows me the two image to compare, like ACDSee do.  :-\

there can only be one image with the same name in a directory, i don't know of any OS ever created that allows for 2 files with the same name in the same folder\directory.

which is why MC renames them, most probably with a (1) at the end.

my web host allows picture.jpg and Picture.jpg to exist in the same directory.

Because most providers use Linux as a web host server OS and is case sensitive.

I don't believe you can configure Windows to be case sensitive.

In Linux user don't have any thing to do with the File Extensions like Windows Does.

For example if you rename MyPhoto.bmp to MyPhoto.exe, in Linux it will still recognise it as a picture file.

But the main thing you have to remember about Linux File Systems is they all are case sensitive. So for example in one directory we can have these many sub folder like:-

Mail
MAil
MAIl
MAIL
mail
maiL
maIL
mAIL

I don't think you can either.

The question raised has been mentioned before ---> http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29885.0

"if a file of the same name already exists, could MC offer some warning with configurable choices rather than silently rename the incoming file and import it anyway"

I personally would not want a warning, i would prefer the program to add the (1) to the end of the file name, and or the few verboten chrs like " \ / : etc...

why should i care? let the OS sort it out, i don't see a problem with such a trivial event.

i would prefer that than to be warned 101,000 times during a batch process (that would make me very mad)

that's where the 'configurable' choices comes in...

place a tick in "always choose this action" would preserve your sanity during batch processes :)

I'd rather know I've made a mistake or that I have duplicate names.
Or, in the case of images, to see what each looks like and the size, quality, etc.
Then I could decide what to do with it.
A check box or something to say 'the same for other dups' would be nice for batch processing.
