Installing 11.1 on system with both 11.0 and 10 on it.
« on: December 02, 2005, 03:46:24 pm »

I have both versions 11.0 and 10 on a system at the moment.  I'd like to replace 11.0 with 11.1 at some point, but I'm unclear what will happen when I do this due to the fact that both 11.0 and 10 are on this system.  Will 11.1 replace 11.0 automatically and leave 10 alone?  Should I uninstall one or both of the existing versions first?

What's the recommended procedure in this situation?

Thanks,

Larry

11.1 library is not compatible with 11.0, so... I think you might be looking for trouble here.

11.1 Installs in the same directory as 11. So you shouldn't have any problems unless you want to revert from 11.1 to 11.0
So, be sure to do a backup of your 11.0 Library first. That way if you want to go back you can.

MC11.1 cannot co-exist with MC11.0.

MC 11.1 library is not backwards compatible, but MC11.1 should be compatible with MC11.0 data as gamer said. (Except the stored display presets, which will be lost = very unfortunate in my opinion. I hope it can be fixed.)

I have installed 11.1 on top of 11.0 a couple of times without problems, but tried it last time a few weeks ago so I don't have up-to-date information to provide (...yet. I think I'll begin my "beta-cycle" tomorrow and start my reporting from possible upgrade issues.)

I don't think the compatibility with MC 10 has changed. 11.1 should work as well (or bad?). Nothing I can think of has changed. The program folders must be different, the libraries must be separate and the user options are stored in separate places in the registry.

When I had MC10 and MC11 installed at the same time I had some plug-in problems. One of the programs tried to use some of the other program's plugins. This was a long time ago and I can't provide exact details.

My "main" library is actually still on an MC10 system.  Given this, how do I migrate from my MC10 system up to MC11 or 11.1?  Can a backed up library from MC10 be restored directly into MC11 or 11.1?  Do I HAVE to install 11 or 11.1 on top of MC10 for it to work correctly?  Is this an issue where newer MC versions are compatible with older libraries, but newer libraries are NOT compatible with older MC versions?

I'm confused about how I should proceed here and don't want to screw things up, so please forgive me for asking for further clarification on this.  I'm looking for the "best" or "safest" way to proceed.

Thanks,

Larry

I'll try to restore an MC10 library backup file to MC11.1 tomorrow. I'll let you know how it went.

Assuming there is ANY doubt as to whether it completely worked or not, what is the "official" stance on this -- i.e. if you have MC10 on a system, what is the "officially" recommended procedure for migrating to MC11 or 11.1?

Thanks,

Is there any official word on this?  I'm just wondering what the "recommended" procedure is for installing 11.1 on a system that already has both 10 and 11.0 on it.

Also -- what's the story on using backups from 10 with 11 or 11.1?  When migrating to a new system, can I install 11 or 11.1 and just restore one of my backups from version 10?  In other words, are version 10 backups "restoreable" on 11 or 11.1, or is it better to install 11 or 11.1 on TOP of a version 10 installation?

I just want to verify this information before upgrading so that I end up with a smooth transition.

Thanks,

Larry

Alex B is the authority on this subject, but...

Backup your library from 11.0.
Install 11.1 and go.

Don't try to go from 10.0 to 11.1 without first touching base at 11.0.

11.1 is light years ahead of 11.0 for iPod support.

Thanks for the information.  What if the system with my "main" library has not yet been updated to version 11?  Can version 10 backups be restored directly into version 11.0, or is it better to install version 11 on TOP of a current version 10 installation?  Since I'm pretty confident that I won't need to go back to version 11, is it recommended to let MC uninstall version 10 during the version 11 install?

On a related note, I may be in a situation where I'll be installing MC on a new system that doesn't have ANY version of MC currently installed.  Can I just install version 11 first and restore one of my version 10 backups directly into it, or do I need to first install version 10, then do the restore, then install version 11 on top of version 10?

Which way is "best"?

Thanks again,

Larry

I tried the behavior with MC11.1.73. I installed it on top of MC11.0. The PC has also MC10 installed.

MC 11.1 has no problems with restoring an MC10 library backup file into a newly created empty library. Almost everything was restored nicely including the static playlists and many of my smartlists. However, the date & time based smartlists were empty, like "Imported his week". I think the time system changed in 11.1 at some stage, though my similar 11.0 smartlists work fine in 11.1 and on the other hand MC11.0 accepted the same smartlists from MC10.

However, the smartlists are a minor problem. Bigger problem is that MC10 cannot play anything after installing MC11.1.73. It hangs immediately. Sometimes it crushes the OS too and Windows shows a blue screen of death. When it does not crush the OS, Windows shows an error message about this file: visstudio.dll.

I think the best would be to backup everything, uninstall MC10 completely, restore the latest MC10 backup into MC11.0, upgrade to MC11.1 and give it a try.
