mp3 boombox
« on: September 23, 2002, 01:39:16 pm »

I see that Phillips is finally offering an mp3 cd boombox. Is the only company to do so. I looked on Amazon.com and it was the only one I found. Any better ones out there? I like Sony but they don't have one yet I guess.

There are dozens of MP3-capable boomboxes on the market.  I bought one from Sony about a year ago.  It was great in every way, but it had a problem with skipping when playing MP3 CD's.  They have a new one that is part of their S2 line.  It's very cool looking, and it sells for $149.99.  My advice is to stay away, far away from the many generic branded ones you will find.

Thanks for the info. I went to Amazon and they only had Phillips in two models. One was too expensive. The other one sounded nice but it didn't have a headphone jack and one bad revue about it's reliability turned me off.

Funny they never showed a Sony mp3 player. I'll have to check again. Anyway any one with some advice about which mp3 boombox to buy I would appreciate as I am going to buy one for using while I travel and work.

Deerhunter,

I met this morning in my bus (I'm bus driver) a young guy with a JVC MP3-Boombox.
I asked him about it and I couldn't get him stop talking about it.
He played an MP3-CD for me and it sounded very well + a very nice display (MP3 Text)

Did you need to tell him to turn it down?

That one is decent; just don't expect a whole lot of bass.  The one I was thinking of is:

I own the box referred to in the last post. I guess it depends on what you're looking for; nobody's perfect.

My criteria was durability; I took it to Burning Man and put it through its paces: Dust. Heat. Shocks. Constant playing.

I liked it. It survived (although you can be sure I bought the no-questions-asked-replacement warranty from Best Buy). The sound seems fine to my amateur ears, although of course at the top end it gets distorted.

The design of it is great with that integrated handle and the shape of it that fits against your leg or side while carrying it; the top loader does tend to come open with very little coaxing. I resorted to a piece of duct tape at times.

I'd call it great for outdoor/camping/sports type use. If you're looking for something that replaces a bookshelf-type of system to port somewhere, I might try somewhere else.
