« on: February 06, 2006, 06:31:13 am »

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what remote control and IR receiver set i can get in the UK that will work with media center. Would the MS MCE remote control work ok as i can get that for £35.

Many thanks,

I use an IRMan infrared receiver.

It works with every remote (you can buy one or chose to use the TV, VCR, CD or Stereo's remote) and works well with MC. This receiver sensitivity is good and it costs 35 Euros (shipping costs include)

I don't know about the MS MCE remote.

Out of curiosity has anyone got an IRMan
running on a RS232 - USB adapter?

I'm looking at one of these, but I'm also liking the look
of a Micro-ITX System in the non to distant future, doubt
it will have RS232 on it!

I use the MS Media Center Remote, and it works perfectly now.

It didn't work a while back, but they added support specifically for this remote about a month ago.

Is that through an update or would i have to download a plug-in??

Thanks for the info...

Built right into MC. There is no need for a remote control plugin.

running on a RS232 - USB adapter?

I use this setup, it worked flawlessly with my ASUS A7V8X motherboard. Then I switched to an ASUS A7N8X motherboard and it worked inconsistently until I added a powered USB hub between the IRMAN/RS232 adapter and the motherboard.  Perhaps not enough power from the usb ports on the second motherboard, not really sure, but it's back to working flawlessly :)

I use the Gyration Motion Media Center Edition remote and I love it.  It's fairly limited, but I use mostly the Theatre View, so it's few buttons are OK with me.  It is RF.

Great,

Just before i order one, the MCE remote comes with the IR receiver, do you use it with this or do you use an IRman or something?

if you use the MS IR receiver, did you just install the hardware and Media Center just picked it up to start assigning the buttons?

Thanks for your help.....

Ordered an IRMan :)
Will be so cool to use my Amplifier remote (Which has controls for
things like CDPlayer which are never used) to control Media Center :)

Hi I have a toshiba laptop that has infrared integrated in its front. The hardware is an SMC IrCC- Fast Infrared Port. Is there any way I could use this with my Universal Remote Control (Kameleon ONEForALL) to control the J River Media Center or anything including Windows Media Player.

Have come across a software called Girder. Would that do the job? Bit of a hefty piece of software.

Cheers

I'm not a hardware expert, but I believe that the IR on the notebook is different from the IR in a remote, and that you'll need to get an IR receiver that MC supports (check the remotes section of options in MC).

Girder wouldn't be needed.

You can teach MC to use most any universal remote.

Slight thread hijack - but does anyone know where I can get an IRMan from? They seem to be rare as hens teeth (the US distributor's website says they are backordered for a month or more)...

Failing that there seems to be plenty of USB IrDA receivers available for a few bucks on ebay, but I'm guessing that will be the same issue that daryah has.

Any input gratefully received...

I'm using the Ira-3 from Home Electronics. It is compatible with the Irman. It works very well with Media Center's Irman plugin.

Thanks - ordered one today - even lets me remotely switch PC on which means I can create a macro for my MX-700 remote to power on all my toys at once!
