Convert ram to mp3
« on: February 21, 2006, 03:05:04 pm »

I've tried to convert ram to mp3 in MC but to no avail. MC says: "You may not have installed on your computer DirectShow filters for decoding the type of file you are trying to play. Please install appropriate filters and try again"

Fine.
But where and how do I do this?

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by "Convert ram to mp3"?

model - ram = Real Audio Media

I'm assuming he has some Real-formatted files he wants to convert to MP3s.  I don't think you can do this from inside MC, which relies on the codec to complete the translation.  Real has no intention of ever letting you convert those files to some other format, as they want you to stay locked in and keep using their player.  You can use other applications to convert them though.  Check this thread at the Ars Technica forums for more info on doing that.  You could also google for ra2wav.exe which supposedly can handle it.

Thanx, Glynor, I kinda thought so but wasn't sure, I haven't used anything Real in soooo long. ;)

Hmm I thought there was some progress on this about a month
ago, using the directshow filters or some such thing.  I think MC maybe able to do it...

After the recent changes MC should use Direct Show for decoding Real Media audio files. I have a few low bitrate Real files that I could analyze and and convert after the changes were made a few weeks ago.

I tried it again now. I can play and convert them, but two of the files are completely silent when they are played or converted. Rather strange.

Here is the playback log. I think it looks normal:

The two files in the middle are silent. Media Player Classic (Real Alternative) can play the files fine. Here are the test files: RAMtestfiles.rar (3 MB).

In any case transcoding from a lossy format to another lossy format should be avoided if possible. The audio quality will further decrease.

I tried the four files.

Initially, when importing them, two of them (resitor, shesgotagun) were not imported as audio. They were documents. When trying to play them, RealPlayer got fired up.

I do not know what was wrong then. But after doing an "Update library (from tags)", they went to their rightful place.

Now all four files play fine.

I converted all of them to mp3. No problem. The new files play just fine.

Fine.
But where and how do I do this?

Download and register Realmedia Splitter filter from

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=87719

After unpacking it, you will find identically named files in two folders:
Release\RealmediaSplitter.ax and
Release Unicode\RealmediaSplitter.ax

Register the unicode version by issuing the following command from Start -> Run:

regsvr32 "<path where the files are unpacked>\Release Unicode\RealmediaSplitter.ax"

In my library they were as audio.

Anyway, "Update library (from tags)" fixed the problem. Thanks.
