Shared library scenarios
« on: March 06, 2006, 10:24:04 pm »

Hi All,

One usage scenario which I've never been satisfied with is having 2 machines use the same library.

I was interested in how you've set up multiple users on the same library.

My initial inclination is to use the MC Library Server. However the problem I've encountered is this . . .

I have two machines machine 1 - headless machine which operates in "Theater View" and machine 2 - in another location which I use to rip, edit etc.

The problem is, I can't run machine 2 as the Library Server as it's not always on and I don’t want a dependency on it when I'm using machine 1. Setting up machine 1 as the server means I can't effectively manage the library from machine 2. Or has this problem been solved? Can you open the same library on 2 machines with no issues?

Any thoughts on how you've set up your multi user environment would be great.

Thanks, . . . Michael

I was just starting to search through the forums for an answer to this exact question. I'm am running into a situation that is almost identical. I have a machine acting as a file server in my house that is directly connected to my big screen in the living room, running Theater View. But I want to manage my library form the computer in my home office, and like Michael, only my server is always running.

I've tried just sharing the library and opening it on both machines. But if I make edits on the office machine, then close media center, at some point the copy running on my server will write to the library and all my changes from the other computer are lost.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem, or does J River have an intention of looking at this soon?

Is there anyone else sharing a library between multiple PCs? How do you handle it?
