extracting lyrics
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:05:37 am »

I use King Sparta's Lyrics Finder (which is definitely faster than previous versions) to add lyrics to my music.

What I'd like to know -- Is there an easy way to extract the lyrics into text files?  I'm a big enough geek that I keep lyrics in text files outside of my media machine.  Right now I'm just going into the lyrics box and hitting "copy to clipboard" and pasting into textpad.  Which is fine for 10-20 songs but not 1000+.

Thanks,
tessa

I worked on this a bit today

it will first read all the fields you have in your media center that includes all the user created ones.

the plug-in will put this list in a check box listing and all you need to do is check a box for that field to be exported.

it has a configurable export file names like

[Artist] - [Name] - [CurrentField].txt

if you select "Batch Export" it will export all fields you have checked in the list as text files, to the media file folder or to a folder you select.

like (Next To File)

C:\My Music\N\NSYNC\NSYNC - Celebrity - GirlFriend.mp3
C:\My Music\N\NSYNC\NSYNC - GIRLFRIEND - Lyrics.TXT

Or

C:\My Music\N\NSYNC\NSYNC - GIRLFRIEND - Lyrics.MP3
C:\My Saved Data Files\NSYNC - GIRLFRIEND - Lyrics.TXT

it also works in reverse where you can "Batch Import" the fields from text files.

It also Has A Manual Mode Where you can select a file and, select a field from the list, this makes this field the current field and then you can press "manual import" or "manual export".

After filling in a bunch of lyrics this past weekend, I had the need to send the lyrics from about 15 songs to somebody else who doesn't use MC. All I wanted was a simple text file with all the lyrics in it. Cut and paste was all I could figure out. I tried the File\Library\Export to XML but that was the entire library so that was no good unless I wanted to do some major editing.

So I was actually hoping something like this plugin existed. You asked for comments so just based on your description and screenshots:
  • Field List title should say Import/Export Field since it an be both (I assume)
  • It would be nice if there was a way to append multiple song fields together into one file instead of having separate files. That leads me to my next suggestion is to let it be saved as XML which then this could easily be accomplished. That would also solve the MC limitation of being able to export selective songs from the library to XML.

I look forward to trying it out.

This Could Be Done Easy With Maybe A Multi Field Tag At The End Like:

Artist Name - Song Name - Multi Field.txt

And All the Checked Items Would Be Placed Into The File With Start And End Info

an Export Of Data Fields, the plug-in exported all fields that had data, the fields not exported had no data.

all fields are cleaned of all illegal chars like for file names ":" "/" "\" etc.... when importing it will use the cleaned file name.
