Advantages of YADB?
« on: May 05, 2006, 02:17:53 am »

Does YADB pose any advantage/benefit over its predecessor?

Just curious.

Thanks,

It's what works with MC.
It is not going to change.

Search on YADB for background.

If we offered an alternate database service as a $10 option, would you consider it?  Which one?

I'd pay for Gracenote/CDDB. It's more complete, more accurate and is also able to construct a playlist from a CD that's been burned from an iTMS purchase.

That would depend.. 10 a year, or 10 lifetime?

For people that want to use CDDB, you can use another player to hit CDDB, then use the get info from CDplayer.ini to bring it into MC, then report to to YADB.

Doesn't take long to do, a few seconds.

FreeDB for $0 a year as it's free would be a great option.

$10 would be fine for Gracenote, even if it's an annual fee.

I've found that if YADB does not have a CD listed that I can usually Rip and tag using Audiograbber that links to Freedb.  They're both free.

It would be nice to have an option to use Freedb, if it really would be free for MC users.

I would pay JRiver ( not the third party provider ) $10 / year so as not to be tied into YADB.  This is the only proprietary part of MC that is not the best - therefore I want the option to chose something else.

I would prefer to see FreeDB access just on general principle.  However if that's not an option (or if it would still cost the $10), I'd pay the extra $10 per major MC version release (I'm not into subscriptions, but if I could "tack on" $10 on the MC upgrade cost I'd probably splurge at least for the first year to compare the experience) for Gracenote.

I am not sure what pros/cons of each system is.  The current one works fine, except it does not tag my CDs all the time.  Also, when they are incorrect it does not allow me to submit the correct changes - which I find odd.

I would love it if JRiver work on their existing database/code to make it superior to the others.  The talent is there, I suppose it would only be a question of time...

just my two cents.

Regardless a choice of another free alternative could never hurt.

On the topic of Gracenote I would pay 10 bucks a year to use their DB and playlsits logic:  http://www.gracenote.com/gn_products/

Any chance that some of their tools could be integrated into MC?

I'd consider paying for a service that had proper tag info for classical music:

- composer name in the composer tag.

- work name in the album tag.  So many CDs would have different album tag values for different tracks.

- performer, conductor and orchestra concatenated in the Artist field.

- The spelling and format of names should be consistent.  (always Mozart, W.A.
and never Wolfgang  Amadeus Mozart.)

- Accented chatcers should be handled correctly by MC 11.

Neither CDDB nor FreeDB represent a big advance over YADB for me.

I would pay extra per year for access to AMG's data (allmusic, allmovies, etc.)

Why? In particular, the styles information and the bios are amazing resources to explore music.

Also, by using the 'followers' list of an artist in allmusic, MC could theoretically create deep links to similar artists you would like.. for example, I can envision MC showing a bio of an artist and if that bio mentions a person/artist that you have in your collection, it would create a virtual link to it inside the bio. That would be really cool.

Choosing AMG for the database source could also prepare the developers for MC user's future need of movie information. I keep hearing rumors that MC 12 will be a video monster.. well you are going to want a movie info source.

An alternative I would settle for (and still pay money for) is the Discogs database. It also features style information but it more expansive when it comes to netlabel and indy artists.

FreeDB is free! Why are you people willing to pay money for access to a free service?  Is this not somewhat akin to paying ransom?
Particularly as it has already been stated that you can get the FreeDB or CDDB data for free by using another software, then import it into MC using the cd.ini file data if you wish.

I totally agree.  Seems kinda odd to me.
Better cover art grabbing would be of more interest to me.
As for Gracenote/CDDB I'd never pay for it, if i had all the money in the world, because of their
history.

Gracenote was nice when I used its services.
I use AMG data to tag now.
What period would the charge cover?

Ham, now my life is complete.  You paid $250 to Izotope so you could watch a bouncing oscilloscope, but you're quibbling over an extra $10 to jriver, enabler of all things media?  I hope Matt takes 5 minutes out of his lunch hour and writes an even cooler-looking plugin that puts your Izotope guys out of business.

It's true, I was lying in wait for poor Ham.  I was hoping to hear him complain, but when he only quibbled I pounced at the opportunity.

I think jriver ought to raise their prices, it's only a question of which features they should add (my personal list, preferably).  If JimH asked if it was worth $50 if they changed the "delete" function in playliasts to "remove"--since it only "removes" them, it doesn't "delete" them--I might say "yes".

Sorry Ham, didn't mean to tee off on your forehead.  I love the look of the Izotope plugin, but first I'll pay $10 to jriver for Gracenote support, and whatever else comes out in MC12.

Well, for my 2 cents worth, MC is CHEAP ! I would pay considerably more for the program ( N.B. program ) maybe USD30 or USD40.

Then as far as the service is concerned ( updates, access to an absolutely incredibly supported forum, and access to the infamous database ) I would pay USD5 a year.

IF, however, the database program was the Rolls-Royce version, and tied in such a way that users could CHOOSE whether to subscribe or not, I would subscribe to the service for USD25 a year.

Maybe we should post a poll and underwrite a subscription service for the DEVELOPMENT of YABD…

If they put the prices up, can they introduce a student discount scheme!  :-\

Nick,
1.  This is a poll (of sorts).

2.  Money makes the world go round but $5 won't cut it.

How about a "just bought a house discount scheme".
I can send a picture of the house...

AMG, for example, would be great.
Otherwise, there is no reason why MC is not offering the possibility to retrieve album art from google or amazon. And they are free.
Why not?

Why doesn't J River add the functinality in Media Center so one can manually add a preferred DB just like Jet Audio does. Then you would have the option to go for a free DB or pay! Matter of choice really!

If you use Ozone 3 simply for the o-scope you're missing the boat.

If quibbling is asking what is intended, then guilty as charged.
A recurring charge for tag data isn't high on my list.

I'd have to ask how often I change tags after my initial rip. I'd have to ask how many CDs I rip per month. Getting tag data outside MC is not difficult and MC imports very nicely thanks.

If you are new to MC or to music on your computer you may well have lots of poorly tagged files. And at that time you may well think an auto tagger with good data is worth whatever is asked. When the pile of untagged files dwindles, so will your ardor for paying a recurring charge for tag data.

Something that creates value, like a playlist creator, suggestions, "more like this" etc is a horse of a different color.

But, answering the question Jim asked, for tag data access, I'm not in the market.

P.S. If I wanted to be 'Ham' that is what I'd have chosen as a username.
