I have my images stored on disk in with the following directory structure
year/event/file.jpg.

I was to create a view scheme which allows me to filter based on this criteria.
I am able to filter on year since it exists in the jpg tag. Is there a way to filter on the event directory instead of the tag on the file? I want to be able to filter based on the event? I saw the you could create pattern based filters and would need to do something like location=c:\photos\year\*.
I could not figure out a way to do this.

Is there a way to do what I want?

yes.

The simplest way 1st: (always do one or two first to check the behaviour is desirable)
Right click on one of your files, find 'library tools > fill properties from filename' and click on it.
untick filename
tick directories, clear the field, and then type [events] in there (with the square brackets)
click OK.

that should fill MC's Events tag with the directory name.
If you would rather have two independant event tags, you would need to create a new field, populate it using the method above, and then use this new field for filtering in your viewscheme.

The only disadvantage is that everytime I add new files I have to update their tags. Is there any way to update the tags automatically as they are added to the
library?

Have your viewscheme in panes view.

If you drag a folder from explorer and drop it on the appropriate event in the events pane, MC will import any new file(s) and tag them with the "dropped on" event.

could you make use of that?
